Short Story: Death At Columbine High School
Yesterday, two teenagers tragically marched into their suburban high school scattering pipe bombs and shooting at their fellow classmates. As many as 25 people students and possibly teachers were feared to be dead at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, said Jefferson County Sheriff John Stone. The gunman, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, were reportedly giggling while gruesomely murdering everyone in their sight. They were known to draw swastikas on their clothes and school books, and considered themselves part of the misfit clique, struck on Adolf Hitler's birthday, singling out minorities and "jocks" for death. Student William Beck said the gunmen "were out to get revenge on the school for being mistreated." Many of the murdered students bodies were found by the bomb-ringed bodies of the two 18 year old suspects who took their own lives. Other bodies were found in the cafeteria, the hallways and outside the school. At least 17 bombs, some connected to timers, some in duffel bags, others connected to 4-foot-tall propane tanks were found as well. Their arsenal included bombs wrapped in nails and BB pellets, with some near the bodies of victims. They remained where they lay last night, even as a prayer service was held for the dead, as police continued to comb the bloody hallways …show more content…
They were led in groups to a window and door, and sent running across a parking lot to a nearby sheltered corner with their hands on their heads. SWAT team members screened each one to make sure a gunman didn't escape posing as a terrorized student. The boys hoped to also kill all of the emergency personnel and the families of the children they had murdered who were surrounding the building (Larkin, 8). After planting the bombs in the cafeteria, both Dylan and Eric quickly departed the school and positioned themselves near their cars to shoot fleeing students from a distance. After waiting a considerable period of time, it was clear that their bombs were defective. The boys quickly ran back into the school, shooting several students on the way into the building. A member of faculty called the police upon hearing the gunshots. Students began to panic and frantically tried to escape. The failed detonation of the bombs caught the boys off guard. Eric and Dylan ran up and down the hallway, detonating bombs in their tracks. They made their way to the library where fifty-two students were hiding, terrified under the tables and in cabinets. They entered the library and asked for anyone who wore a white cap – all varsity athletes at the time wore white caps – to get on their feet. Eric and Dylan murdered anyone wearing a white cap and the people around the athletes. After shooting the students in the library, they moved to the cafeteria. Harris and Klebold fired several bullets at the defective bombs, hoping to ignite them, but instead started an accidental fire. They soon gave up on the bombs and returned to the library where they committed suicide. The…

Many of the officers who first responded to the shooting at Columbine, were not properly trained for what they encountered. Two of the officers traded fire with Eric and Dylan. They eventually stopped because they knew they should wait for a specially trained team. This was shown not to be a smart decision, because by the time the trained team got into the building, Eric and Dylan killed ten of the thirteen victims. After the team entered the building, they took several hours going from room to room. In this time Eric and Dylan had turned their guns on themselves in the library (Columbine Tragedy 1). The killer’s motivation was key into the investigation of Columbine. Many school shootings involve a person targeting individuals who have bullied them or they did not like. Eric and Dylan wanted something much more than that. They wanted the entire nation to know what they did. The students and teachers were just “collateral damage,” as Timothy McVeigh described. They knew that if their plan was successful they would would be nationally known. “The killers, in fact, laughed at petty school shooters. They bragged about dwarfing the carnage of the Oklahoma City bombing and originally scheduled their bloody performance for its anniversary” (“The Depressive” 1). Their plan was made easier because of their gun supplier. Mark Manes supplied Eric and Dylan with the guns they used. He was arrested in May of 1999, a month after the shooting (Hasday 18). The story was already being viewed on local television within a half hour of the shooting. In the beginning, everything was a speculation about what happened. There were countless mix-ups in what really happened. Eric and Dylan had been disposing of layers of clothing. This made them look different, which caused witnesses to believe there were multiple killers. The news coverage became viewed by millions. The Columbine shooting became…

The lives of many were to change on the day of April 20th, 1999, at Columbine High School. With the death of twelve students and one teacher, it was to be the deadliest mass murder committed on an American high school campus. The massacre, committed by senior students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, sparked debate over gun control laws; whether the availability of guns across the United States, especially to young people such as these, was socially acceptable. This event is what sparked Moore to create his documentary, ‘Bowling for Columbine’.…

Problem Statement: The response to the shootings in Columbine could have been handled more effectively if there was a solid coordinate effort from law enforcement and emergency units in the area. The plan of action to prevent the incident from playing out further was hastily put together and only cost more lives at danger. All possible lines of communication whether it be from law enforcement officials, emergency personnel or even the media for that matter, were contradicting each other and inaccurate in their details. Information from witnesses, victims and Columbine school officials also proved to be unreliable in this terrorist act. Their accounts of what…

Lastly, we will take a look at some school shootings and interpret exactly what happened. School shootings are a horrific act of nature and sadly enough steps are not being taken by the government, by the parents, and by the shooters themselves in order to stop…

and 12:08 p.m. a mass school shooting occurred at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado. The type of attack was a school shooting, mass murder, murder-suicide, arson, and attempted bombing. On that day there were a total of 15 deaths including both Eric Harris and Dylan Kalgold, the perpetrators. They had various motives including: bullying, personal stress, terrorism, and a video game reenactment. That is crazy right? What kind of person would use actual human beings to reenact a video game? This massacre sparked a huge debate over gun control laws. Secret Service researchers found to believe that Zero- tolerance policies and metal detectors are unlikely to be useful during these moments of attack. In a split second something can happen. Most attackers usually had access to and had used weapons prior to the attack. School shootings are a partial percentage of the death rates that rise every single…
