Short Story: Empire Island
One day, a little child asked his mommy, “Why does the sun rise and set, instead of staying in the sky all day and night?” “Well,” the mom said, “It’s because a long time ago, when the sun really did stay in the sky all day and night, some people had a discussion…”

“Hey Frank, when are you going to acknowledge the mortals?” wondered Howard. “When they get past stage two.” replied Frank. “Now that’s just unfair!”

These gods were discussing the mortals down below, and were wondering when to appear before them as superior beings.

(Two months later)

“HEY FRANK, COME TAKE A LOOK AT THIS!” “What is it Howard?” “They got past stage two!” “Oh, well.. Do we appear before their eyes?” “Sure, but let's set up everything.”

Appearing before the mortals in a glow of light, they were quickly worshipped and presented with trinkets. However, it was only a couple of centuries before they were besieged with requests about aid.

Not worth it at all!” “A couple of trinkets? Really Howard? Look at all those gold items in our room!” “You know, you’re right.” “Anyway. we’ve got some complaints are about how hot it is.You think it has something to do with the sun being directly overhead? Roasting them in its bright brilliance?”“Yeah, what are we going to do about

Another, yet subsidiary, argument the author makes relates to Ancient Egypt’s new Pharaoh in 1370 B.C. Pharaoh Akhenaton discarded tradition and religion in favor of new ideas. “He had no time for the Egyptian religion, with its many gods and its mysterious rituals. ‘There is only one God,’ he taught his people, ‘and that is the Sun, through whose rays all is created and all sustained. To Him alone you must pray’ (Gombrich 15).” As you can see, the Pharaoh created a new belief amongst the people, by stating that there is only one god that exists, which is the Sun. Akhenaton says the Sun’s rays is what created everything on Earth and sustains it even now. The new Pharaoh also changed the style of architecture from a “severe, rigid, and solemn”…

The use of "evening" and "morning" may be held to limit "day" to the solar day; but the frequent parabolic use of natural phenomena may warrant the conclusion that each creative "day" was a period of time marked off by a beginning and ending. (Scofield’s Reference Notes)…

In Day Of Empire, Amy Chua throughout the book explains the rises and falls of the most powerful hyper powers, large empires being able to maintain large areas while being stable in history. Her thesis of the book states tolerance was the rise and fall of the first empires in history. Where tolerance is the cause and decline of an empire. The empires had tolerance, Chua explains in her book that tolerance is the freedom of the people to do as they please and coexist with each other no matter the religion or even ethnical background which is what led to the rise of the empires. At the same time, tolerance led to the decline through the intolerance of the leaders as well as too much tolerance, where as the more a empire became diverse the harder it was to become unified and help fix problems. Intolerance where as leaders changed as time went on the more ignorant and greedy they became, they wanted things their way as well as to their standards. They set rules and made the people change their way of life which led to the fall of the hyperpower because of the rebellion of the people and other powers conquering.…

In both The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Essential Odyssey, the actions of key individuals are continuously being placed under question. As a result, it can be very difficult to understand what can be considered just in situations. I will first demonstrate how the characters in both of these texts were granted approval and gained support from either their gods or community leaders. I will then analyze how even though these individuals went against other groups of people, their actions were still just because of the people that they received approval from. Finally, I will argue the ability that some people have over others and how that, in turn, impacts how a situation is perceived.…

Frank O’Hara’s poem “A True Account of Talking to the Sun at Fire Island” is a fun account of the speaker’s encounter with the actual sun. This poem is not only fun, but a great comic pat on the back for both the speaker and even the reader. It’s nice to think that the Sun took time out of its busy schedule of waking up the earth’s inhabitants to give the speaker some words of encouragement and to let him know that his work is appreciated. The opening line, “The sun woke me up this morning loud / and clear,” (1) which was amusing because the sun usually signals the beginning of the day already, but this sun took it a step further and vocally woke the speaker. However the speaker reacted much more calmly that I would have. The sun would have been met with maniacal screams and running away faster than humanly possible.…

As an attempt to obtain a better picture of the long history of invasions and conquests in West Asia, historians have referred to mythology and hymns, which clarified the relationship between nomads and settled peoples. The epic Gilgamesh, for example, reveals Enkidu and Gilgamesh initially engaging in vigorous battle but eventually becoming lifelong friends. This might have suggested that settled peoples (represented by Gilgamesh) and pastoral nomads (represented by Enkidu) came to possess a warm relationship with each other after the various instances of tension occurred between them. Hymns that involved religious beings additionally assisted in revealing potential connections as well as conflicts of the two groups. For example, the nomads,…

The Holocaust was potentially the greatest case of genocide in recent history. This leads to the Holocaust often overshadowing less extensive atrocities. One of these atrocities was committed in our very own country, when we imprisoned and segregated Japanese American civilians. It could be argued that the reason why this is often overlooked is because history is written by the winners; however, there were two journalists, Walter and Mildred Woodward, from Bainbridge Island, Washington, who spoke out against this terrible decree. This was one of the reasons that this atrocity is still remember to this day…

In the words of Mark Twain, “….No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one, no other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking, through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides, other things change, but it remains the same” and “the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored to any ocean.” What islands could inspire such eloquence and longing? The Hawaiian Islands, a chain of eight large islands located in the South Pacific…
