Short Story: King Of Sparta
“Did I hear that right? There is a plan to fight Persia at Thermopylae?” My friend Aesop asked. We were coming out of a meeting at the barracks. “Yes, my friend, we will defend the pass from the invaders,” I replied. In the meeting in the barracks, King Leonidas had told us that he was going to hand pick 300 of our elite soldiers to fight Persia. “Did you know, Acacius?” he asked me, “Only fathers will be going on this mission.” He was correct. The king was only picking soldiers who had children. “I wonder why that is,” He said, “does he want there to be and heir to the family?” “I know as much as you do,” I told him. I was wondering why he was only taking men with children. “You have a son Aesop. Do you think you will be selected?” I knew …show more content…
He turned and walked off briskly. I tried to call him and apologize but he ignored me. I had called my friend unloyal to Sparta, and that was a large insult. As I turned around, I almost walked right into someone. I almost told them to watch where they were going, but then I caught myself. It was Leonidas. King of Sparta. “Acacius,” He said, “I would like you to accompany me, as a captain, on our march to The Hot Gates.” He stood tall and broad, an intimidating man. “My King, I would be honored to march with you,” I said it, as I had many times before. But even though I have repeated those words more than once, I truly meant them. They were not an automatic response. I will always be honored to march for Sparta. “And I will be glad to have you by my side, Captain.” He said. “Oh, and by the way, I will need your help gathering men.” I nodded and left for the barracks. A spartan warrior is not allowed to live with his wife. He lives in the barracks with his brothers in arms until he is 30, at which point he becomes and “equal”. In the morning, I decided to search for men to accompany me and Leonidas on our march to Thermopylae. The first person I went to was Aesop. I knew that he should come on this march. This was of great significance to all of Greece and I wanted my friend to

Women were perhaps the most important feature of Spartan society for many reasons. A major responsibility they were given was to oversee the kleros while their husbands were away at war or in training. According to J.T Hooker, a woman could also inherit the state owned land from her father. This meant that they controlled the family wealth, and in effect, the Spartan agricultural economy. Spartan male citizens were dependant on their wife’s efficiency to pay their “dues” to the syssitia. Their most important role was to become mothers of citizens. Xenophon stated, “for free women the most important job was to bear children.” From birth, mothers disciplined the child and instilled the attitudes of the agoge both physically and psychologically. They introduced their children to physical training and taught them to be tough by refusing to nurture them as babies. They implanted the ideas of constantly performing at perfection, and were ultimately responsible for raising children to conform and be loyal to the state. Spartan women freely gave up their sons to the agoge at age seven, for their formal military training. Consequently mothers had to maintain her son’s discipline before the introduction to the agoge. The Greeks received information regarding the numbers and desires of the Persians from spies they sent to Sardis, Xerxes headquarters. Having experience gained from previous Persian campaigns, they knew that in order to battle against such super power , they had to form alliances to fight for one common goal, despite the fact they belonged to different races and were organized into city-states. In Autum of 481 B.C. , A Pan-Hellenic meeting was held in Corinth , having 31 cities attending the meeting besides a few that did not. Unanimously Sparta was given leadership of the army and the fleet under the command of King Leonidas, although the general defense plan was commanded by the Athenian Themistocles, who foresaw the battle will be determined on the seas, if only the pass between Central to Southern Greece was guarded.…

Leonidas was the king of Sparta between 488BC and 480BC. The movie “300” narrates the story of Leonidas leading 300 Spartan “body guards” and fighting to death against the massive Persian army led by “God King” Xerxes in the battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. Prior to the start of the war, Leonidas knew that his army was hugely outnumbered and knew with certainty that his move against the Persians was a suicide mission. His intention was to delay the fast approaching Persian army from reaching the heart of Sparta by using a narrow mountain pass in Thermopylae to his advantage. The movie concludes with the brutal killing of Leonidas and his men by the massive Persian arrow barrage. Even though the battle was won by the Persians, the sacrifice and resistance of the 300 Spartans against the one million Persians served as a moral victory for Greeks and helped the different Greek clans to unite against the invading Persians.…

Though military activity was forbidden by Spartan law during the Carneia festival, King Leonidas decides to prepare for war with Xerxes before the Persian king and his troops could advance to Sparta. He knew that he would not get the support of the politicians to get the bigger Greek army to follow him. Therefore he chose 300 Spartans who had sons to carry on their names to be his bodyguards and decides go to war. His vision and strategy was to block the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes could pass. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back their enemies in one of the famous last stands of history. Leonidas was self-confident and had a strong moral conviction in his course and the ability to inspire trust among his followers to achieve his goals. He is seen as both charismatic and transformational as he could convey his vision and form strong emotional bonds with his followers.
