The short story, Kattekoppen, is about a Dutch born man named Levi that had joined the U.S Army, a navy seal, and soldiers in Logar, Afghanistan. I feel like this story had a lot of good descriptive detail in it, but I didn’t feel like I never figured out the main point of the story. But what I did figure out, was that the title of the story came from Levi’s Dutch licorice candy that was sent to him from his mother. Although he isn’t a very interesting young man he appears to be very good at his job, and the navy seal narrator thinks for a second that he might have to replace Levi with this computer loving guy. But the navy seal does not replace him, and it seem to be because of Levi’s horrible candy. One of the first descriptive moments of the short story was on the very first page. “We set out from the dog cages under a full moon, which seemed to cast X-rays rather than light. Thus the dogs’ ribs were exposed, as was the darkness below the ice on our steep climb uphill.” (Mackin, pg. 202) I feel like this quote described the scene very well, because it set the scene of a dark night with a eerily bright moon. The moonlight accented all of the details that they never would have seen in the daylight. I feel like it also set the mood of the story, because the descriptions were very dark and deep and that is how the story felt.
