Short Story Thank You, M Am By Langston Hughes
Martin Luther King Jr once encouraged, “ We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.” This proves that we must expand and preserve the amount of forgiveness in our hearts to help others. In the short story, “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes, One night, Rodger, a homeless fourteen year old boy, seized a large woman’s pocketbook, but before he could escape with the handbag, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones captured Roger and dragged him to her household. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones a compassionate antagonist of the short story, …show more content…
Without a doubt Roger is still a young boy that can make a difference in the world if he changes his perspective and takes responsibility for his actions. The author wrote, “He did not trust the woman not to trust him. And he did not want to be mistrusted now” (79). This scene particularly shows Roger learning that Mrs. Jones trusts Roger and shows him that she has done terrible things in her life too but she learned and he did too. Mrs. Jones did not watch Roger to see if he would try stealing her pocketbook in her own home because she showed him she trusted and forgive him for his cruel actions. An example is, “Well, you didn't have to snatch my pocket book to get some suede shoes” (79). Once again the author is demonstrating the right versus wrong, and teaching the readers to acknowledge the wrong doings. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones advises and explains to Roger to request something not take something without endorsement. Roger’s characteristic has developed confidently throughout the story understanding more from others who acknowledge trust and

The novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville is an epic tale of the voyage of the whaling ship the Pequod and its captain, Ahab, who relentlessly pursues the great Sperm Whale during a journey around the world. The narrator of the novel is Ishmael, a sailor on the Pequod who undertakes the journey out of his affection for the sea. He also doesn’t want to be in an important position, such as captain or cook, because then he’d have responsibilities, and that would really get him down to work and be able to have things to fill up his schedule during the day. Ishmael says that being a lowly sailor and getting ordered around does take some getting used to. He hadn’t really packed many things for his voyage just a few carpetbags and clothes. When he had entered the spouter inn he looked around being amazed about…

The Sunflower, by Simon Wiesenthal, was an intriguing and thought –provoking novel that raised many questions on the theological and moral concept of forgiveness. Furthermore, it delved into the matter of whether an individual has the right to forgive in the name of others, or whether forgiveness of the perpetrator was even deserved in the first place. The narrative is told from the first person point of view of Simon Wiesenthal, a young man in his 30s, imprisoned in a work camp. He tells his story of a dying Nazi’s plea for forgiveness and his own subsequent actions. After we hear his story, we can read the opinions of many individuals that tell what they would have done in Simon’s place, and add their own insights into the discussion. Before we delve into the specifics of what I would have done in Simon’s place, and which contributor I can relate to most, I would like to discuss the concept of forgiveness, and what it means to me.…

According to Dr. King, his dream “becomes a nightmare.” In other words, Dr. King is seeing no change even after the march on Washington, where both white people and black people held hands and fought for a common cause. This event had brought people together, Dr. King thought that things were going to finally change. Days after days, roaming on the streets, he saw his brothers, of every color, struggling with poverty and injustice. That even though people hoped for Dr. King’s dream, they still did nothing.…

As human beings we are often reluctant to let go of our anger and unwilling to forgive others. This becomes especially true in the case of loved ones or family members. The poem, “How Do We Forgive Our Fathers?,” written by Dick Lourie, addresses the different dilemmas associated with a child forgiving his/her father. In his six-stanza poem, the poet discusses how a child should forgive their father for traumatic events imposed on the child. This includes reasons for forgiveness, appropriate time to forgive, and whether or not to even forgive at all. Detailed through the different stanzas, the poem suggests that until one learns how to appropriately forgive another for wrongful behavior, they will never be able to let go of resentment and find inner peace.…

Langston Hughes, poem, Let America Be America Again, captivated my attention due to my current pursuit in American history; presently I am taking US History II. The diction of this poem is simplistic, allowing the reader to cognitively grasp the historical importance and theme. Hughes, suggest to the readers that the America that is held to such high esteem is merely an idyllic dream still awaiting realization; however, fulfilment of the true American dream must become an actuality to all citizens, not just the privileged few.…

The dream that was never born, the promise of hope that was never promised, the right to be treated equal that was never given. Langston Hughes expresses his discomfort with the American ideals in his poem Let America Be America Again. The author details the aspects of a life that American is supposed to represent, the right of liberty and opportunity, yet Hughes lets its discomfort be known; The discomfort of a lie, a lie that promises equality for everyone, and the right to be part of the land of liberty an opportunity. Many leaders in today’s society possess characteristics that determine how they are either chosen or self-made. These characteristics could range from being a charismatic, transformational, motivational, or influential leader. Each has its own meaning, but it is possible for leaders to possess more than one characteristic. Being a charismatic leader consists of having a charming and colorful personality. As the text reads, “In the study of leadership, charisma is a special quality of leaders whose purposes, powers, and extraordinary determination differentiate them from others."…

Langston Hughes exposes the dishonesty of the church and how blindly trusting in God can have a negative impact on ourselves. Hughes’ decision to stand up and be “saved” clearly shows peer pressure, because when all of the kids at the revival were “saved” he became the center of attention which became a reason for Hughes to lie. Unfortunately, deceiving someone is a bad thing, but lying about a lie is not necessarily a negative thing. At the beginning of the article when Hughes said “I was saved from sin when I was going on thirteen. But not really saved.”…

What is forgiveness? The term, commonly seen as a religious act, has various viewpoints. Its level of importance is deemed subjective as each individual’s opinion varies from one to the other. Mankind’s heavy debate on the subject is visible from multiple platforms such as novels, music, and movies. While one medium may deem it very important, another may see it as an unnecessary action. The standardized definition of forgiveness is “to pardon an offense or an offender” (“Forgive”). However, such a simple definition truly undermines how important and necessary forgiveness is. Forgiveness is an action created by choice. Likewise, choosing to not forgive an offender is also the result of a choice. The actions that result from these choices produce opposite outcomes. While one may lead an individual down a path of peace and prosperity, the other will lead an individual down a path of anger and resentment. While forgiveness may just be a simple action, its importance extends beyond as its action carries unforeseen effects. Forgiveness is important because it maintains personal relationships, conserves the functioning society in which they are conceived, and sustains one’s own health.…
