The feud over the narrow, sickly strip of land “stolen” away from the Znaeym family had lasted for decades. Tensions had grown, and now, standing on the edge of the unusually restless trees, Ulrich felt that he could finally do something. Georg Znaeym was trespassing in that forest, and he would get him at last. In “The Interlopers”, the author, Saki, uses irony to support the theme that no matter how much power a person has, nature can always win in the end.…

The various theories put forward to explain the circumstances surrounding the Ice Man’s death are plausible, although inconclusive. The initial theory was devised by K. Spindler, which consisted of the idea that the Ice Man was a shepherd who fled his village post conflict; although this theory is heavily based on assumption. The subsequent theory was that of Tom Loy, who theorised that the Ice Man was a hunter that had been injured after a territorial dispute that he had encountered, and eventually passed as a result; however this theory presents inconclusive framework. The final theory was presented by Eduart Egarter-Vigal and Walter Leitner, who suggest that the Ice Man was professionally executed (idea drawn from significant wounds and scarring) due to a power struggle in his village; this also presents inconclusive evidence and trace of speculation.…

In the story “The Interlopers”, hunters, Ulrich von Gradwitz and his enemy Georg Znaeym, come face to face in Ulrich’s woods. They each have hate in their heart and murder on their mind but nature’s own violence overwhelms them both. They get stuck underneath a fallen beech tree and can’t escape. Both of them have men on their way to help them out but, whose will be the first to arrive? As both men sit and argue with each other, Ulrich decides to be the bigger person and ask for Georg’s friendship. “… I’ve changed my mind. If my men are the first to come you shall be the first to be helped, as though you were my guest. We have quarreled like devils all our lives over this stupid strip of forest, where the trees can’t even stand upright in a breath of wind. Lying here tonight, thinking, I’ve come to think we’ve been rather fools; there are better things in life than getting the better of a boundary dispute. Neighbor, if you will help me to bury the old quarrel I—I will ask you to be my friend,” Ulrich said. Georg Znaeym accepted his friendship request and agreed to be civil with each other by saying, “…. I would never fire a shot on your land, save when you invited me as a guest; and you should come and shoot with me down in the marshes where the wildfowl are. In all the countryside there are none that could hinder if we willed to make peace. I never thought to have wanted to do other than hate you all my life, but I think I have changed my mind about things too, this last half-hour, and you offered me your wine flask… Ulrich von Gradwitz, I will be your friend.” While in the silence thinking of the changes this reconciliation would bring, Ulrich suspects he sees his men. There are nine to ten figures coming through the woods, but is it what he thinks to be?…

In the poem “Icarus,” Christine Hemp uses literary devices to convey that a father-son relationship can be problematic. Hemp pulls a twist on the original myth, and retells it in Icarus’ point of view. Her version of the myth shows that Icarus wasn’t very fond of his father Daedalus; however Daedalus didn’t realize that Icarus wanted to be free. “bound by the string…for years to untie TO I didn’t know…to return” (#14 and 15 TO 16 and 17) This quote portrays the emotion Icarus feels towards his father by the use of irony. At this point, the reader understands that Icarus had to deal with Daedalus with only the hope of exiting the prison, but once free he longs to be away from his father. Christine Hemp threw a new strand of emotion into the mix by showing that Icarus wanted to be free; as doing so, he caused a catastrophe. “Poor Daedalus, his mouth an O below, his hands outstretched to catch the rain…” (#18 and 19) This excerpt shows diction, which illustrates Daedalus’ innocence with the words ‘poor’ and ‘O below’. Hemp also tried to show the difference between Icarus and Daedalus by using asyndeton. “my clumsiness with figures, father’s calm impatience, cool logic, interminable devising.” (#8 and 9) This shows Icarus’ reasons as to why he doesn’t like Daedalus, and why he tries to be better than his father. Since Daedalus is clueless, he couldn’t prevent Icarus’ death; now the reader can infer that Daedalus will have a life of sorrow and regret, without knowing the truth. Hemp’s use of the devices diction, irony, and asyndeton help the reader further understand the myth in a way the original myth couldn’t.…
