I strongly believe that Herbert's death resulting in the collateral money was only made possible because of Mr. White's wish. There is no possible way that this event could have been foreseen. Especially the exact amount of the money that Mr. White wished for. There's something freaky going on and that monkey
paw seems to be the cause of it.
I think Mr. White's motive to make a wish was mainly to stem his fears about the paw. His friend shook him up a bit with the warnings and the stories about how he came in possession of the paw. Mr. White probably thought if he made a wish, most likely it wouldn't come true. Unfortunately his wish came true.
If I were in the same situation, I would have probably let the paw burn in the fire where it was thrown. I don't see myself as superstitious, but I would rather be safe than sorry. If the price of my wishes was death, I think I stick to living without having my wishes come true.
Well the result of the first wish would prompt me to suggest burning the paw. Then live with the guilt that they killed their son and that they should have believed the stories their friend told them. But seeing as how I have another lesson about this story, I'm going to guess there's another part to read so they don't do that.
If I faced he same problems as the Whites did, I would just get rid of the paw. That's what seems to be fueling the source of this tragedy and horror. I would destroy the paw before something else happened. Like I said, better safe than sorry.
