The Monkey’s Paw grants three separate owners with three different wishes; the White’s family is made of three people and Mr. White is also the third owner of the paw. During the second day, the man who informed Mrs. White of Herbert’s death had walked up to the gate three times before gathering the courage to finally walk up to their door. After realizing that they have two more wishes left, Mrs. White orders her husband three times to wish their son alive again. A little while later, the revived corpse of Herbert knocked three times before his mother hears. The author emphasizes the saying that “bad luck comes in three”, which was very common in the Western culture. Supernatural Occurrences were limited in “The Monkey’s Paw”, however it doesn’t deter the fact that it still shows the dark and evil side of the human nature. The monkey’s paw itself has magical powers, which is unusual, but it also makes the story alluring. The sudden death of Herbert shows how scary it can be when you make wishes without considering the aftermath that it may cause. The story may not be the kind that will give you jump scares or leave you sleepless for nights, but it definitely makes you think about the kind of world we live in.
