One of the reason drug testing should be mandated in professional sports is to maintain fair game. The use of drugs like steroids is a form of cheating. The fact that steroids work so well, they establish a fraudulent benefit for those who are taking them, and this does not end up in a fair game for the opponents. Even if there were harmless performance-enhancing substance, if it’s not available to everybody, using it would still be cheating. Mandatory drug testing …show more content…
supports fairness in sports, it helps ensure that everyone is equal when competing against opponents.
Secondly, a reason to drug test in professional sports is to ensure the team players good physical and mental health.
Drug testing is essential for the safety, health and welfare of all the athletes. Most professional athletes take much high doses of anabolic steroids than those prescribed for medical conditions. Researchers will not be able to originate studies that would precisely test the effects of high amounts of steroids on athletes, since testing participants such high dosages would be bad. This means that the effects of taking drugs like steroids at very high amounts will not be well studied. Anabolic steroids has some crucial physical and mental side effects as well. Athletes who use drugs in such high doses may develop problems like prominent breasts, baldness, shrunken penis and testicles, infertility, and
impotence.
Third reason for drug testing in sports is to help stop substance abuse among athletes. Substance abuse is the most vital issue that athletes face in today’s society. The use of illegal medications, wrong use of legal drugs and supplements, use of performance-enhancing drugs, use of excess alcohol and too much use of tobacco are absolutely not tolerable with the principles that are expected. It also concedes the integrity of athletic competition. Athletes are known to have good health. Although some might develop some kind of illness or injury. Excessive use of illegal and legal drugs restricts all the athletes’ abilities to perform physically and mentally, plus it can also shorten an athletes’ lifespan. Compulsory drug tests will restrict prolonged use of drugs and help stop substance abuse.
In Conclusion, the best way to have affair game field and for all playing safe for all athletes is to have testing every year. This will ensure the physical and mental health as well as wellness of all the athletes. There should be a mandatory testing for all the team members instead of randomly testing. Consequences need to be severe if an athlete is tested positive for a performance enhancer drug. It will not be fair to other athletes’ career when other team players are taking performance enhancers to help their performance and make more money than the other athletes. It does not matter how good or bad an athlete is, a zero-tolerance policy should be placed at all levels of competition.
