The numbers of minorities in the United States has significantly increased within the last decade. More specifically, older adults ages 65 and older also are becoming more culturally diverse. Expectedly, these changes in the population changes are also affecting the composition of facilities that care for older adults with functional limitations. Due to the fast growing number of minorities, nursing staff should begin to implement cultural competence to specifically meet the needs of their older patients. According to McBride, cultural competence…
This number will more than double to over 70 million in only forty years, and the age group 85 and older will triple in the same time period. Huge differences between racial and ethnic groups exist with minority groups having shorter life spans at birth. A demographic cross over effect also exists in which minority older adults who have survived to age 85 are as or more likely to live into their 9th decade as their white counterparts. Demographics within racial and ethnic groups as a whole are also changing, and minorities are starting to make up greater percentages of the older adult population as the world ages.…

McGuire, Klein, and Chen (2008) were interested in determining the amount of ageism present amongst older adults in East Tennessee, USA. These researchers also wanted to examine the types of ageism reported by such individuals. McGuire et al. (2008) hoped…
Before the United States was called the United States there were people that would be considered minorities here. In the late fifteenth century when the Europeans arrived here there were millions of people to be considered a “minority”. Being a minority in the United States brings many uphill battles for many different types of people. Ageism is the prejudice and discrimination against the elderly. (pg. 395 racial and ethnic groups) Society view the elderly as disease and death and ends up glorifying youth as the ideal thing to be. Most middle age people are upset to be getting older because of these stereotypes about the elderly. 84% of people over the age of 60 have been subjected to ageism whether it was at a job where they were looked at as a liability or just in society itself. Some elderly people deal with discrimination from people who are afraid to get old and see the elderly as a reminder of what they are going to deal with. (pg. 395-396 racial and ethnic groups)…
What would a society look like without healthy elderly individuals? The elderly compose a large portion of the population, and many people do not realize how vulnerable and unsafe old age can be. It is difficult for elderly people to live out the later stage in their lives without protection and prevention of certain problems. An act that I will discuss is The Elder Justice Act of 2009. This act has helped support elders by combating elder abuse, and helping prevent it as well. Another act I will focus on is The Older Americans Act, which has provided an array of helpful resources for elderly people in need.…
