The electoral college should be abolished simply because it does not reflect a common citizen’s vote, in an article by The Huffington Post it is said that a presidential nominee needs to only win 21% of the votes and still win the Presidency:”A presidential candidate could be elected with as a little as 21.8%.” So even if the other candidate received 79% of the popular votes and run away with …show more content…
the election and still not win.In the 2000 election between George HW Bush and Al Gore, Al Gore won the popular vote 48% to 47%, Al Gore won 48.4% of the popular vote, trumping the 47.9% that George W. Bush garnered. However in the Electoral College, Gore received 266 votes while Bush received 271.” and still lost as he lost the key state of Florida over a month long court battle, but he should’ve won automatically as he did win the Popular vote, and if there was no electoral college Al Gore will not only be remembered as a Vice President but also as a President .In reality, the POPULAR vote doesn't matter thus not reflecting the majority of Americans vote
The Electoral College was established in a time where there was little to no trust between the government and the people as before the US was a democratic nation it was under a monarchy, the founding Fathers believed that the people weren't qualified enough to choose who the president was thus electing to use the Electoral College but the reality is that method has not worked as many election were decided by a swing state and has produced lots of unqualified presidents such as George HW Bush, Richard Nixon,[first name]Hoover and President Donald Trump all have been known to leading us into many controversies and some being unqualified one trait that the Electoral College prided itself in while electing the president.
The delegates that take part in making the electoral college have very high partisan towards their party as they would vote for their party nominee regardless of his or hers ideologies, in an article published by Time magazine it is to have said,”in the end, the so-called “faithless electors” of the US electoral college failed resoundingly in their aim to stop Donald Trump.” This quote is too have said that even a candidate in some people's eyes a joke was still elected to office due to these “faithless electors” these delegates that help elected our president, in reality, have no open mind but are biased to what their party affiliation and not who is best qualified.
In conclusion the Electoral College is system of the past as it does not truly reflect what Americans think but what faithless partisan electors think and believe, the Electoral College was built in a time where there wasn't any trust in what was a so-called democracy but it was a way for the government to show their distrust of the people. The Electoral College is a disaster and ultimately should be
abolished.
