Borden, Sam. (2013 Nov 14) Robbie Rogers Reflects on the Season in the Spotlight as a Gay Athlete. Nytimes.com. 2014 Apr 4.
Borden is writing about Robbie Rogers, a MLS soccer player who came out in early February and played for the Los Angeles Galaxy this past season. Rogers appeared in games prior to Jason Collins and was coined the first openly gay athlete to participate in a prominent North American professional league in Major League Soccer. The article is somewhat diving in to how Rogers dealt with the past season and the experiences he faced. When he signed with the LA Galaxy, he felt he found an organization that support him and his sexual orientation but he also acknowledged that the season didn’t come and go without some distractions and discrimination. Borden states that Rogers coming out sparked the debate on how a gay athlete would be perceived in professional sports.
This article provides another view from soccer but from a different part of the country. In my argument, I can use how Rogers was the beginning to the issue and also he’s feelings and experiences on how he has been inspiration to other gay athletes around the world, kids and adults, who …show more content…
That is my argument for my paper. I feel as if the players truly accept Collins and don’t think twice about what kind of player and person he is. I will acknowledge that their prior relationships with Collins could have aided the transaction and made it more comfortable for Collins in the locker room. This doesn’t look into opinions of people within the Brooklyn Nets who did not have previous relationships with Collins but it also doesn’t mean those opinions were
