developed a new technique of measuring the angular distance from the moon to the sun. During the night he would use stars instead of the sun. By doing this, he helped thousands of sailors and explorers and helped to put land on the map. James Cook first saw New Zealand on October 6, 1769. He landed in Poverty Bay 2 days later. The people of New Zealand did not like him or his acquaintances. They broke into a fight and some Maori ended up dying. Some time later, he successfully finished circumnavigating New Zealand. I think that he should be remembered for this because not very many put entire countries on the map for everyone to see, this changed people and the way they saw the world.

Not only did He help discover New Zealand, he also discovered the Cook Islands (named after himself, of course).
He first visited them in 1773. They are located in the South Pacific. There are 15 islands in the group, and they are spread several miles apart. James Cook later circumnavigated these islands and named them after himself. He was credited for the discovery of these islands. James Cook was also credited with the discovery of Australia. He discovered it on August 22nd, 1770. He sailed in from the East, and landed on the East coast of what is now Australia. He claimed it, and tried to name it New South Wales (which obviously didn’t stick). Once landing there, He immediately began mapping it and later finished it. In my opinion, discovering a continent is something worth being remembered for. James cook successfully discovered the Cook Islands, put New Zealand on the map, discovered the East Coast of Australia, and improved circumnavigation and mapping techniques. In my opinion, James Cook should be remembered as one of the greatest explorers and mappers of all time. All though other people would have done it eventually, James Cook did it first. He was simply ahead of his
time.
