Should Leslie Van Houten Be Released From Prison
Should Leslie Van Houten be released from prison based on her good behavior after serving over 47 years in prison? I think that in order for me to come up with a decision, I will need to fully understand everything about her. The first thing that I am going to research is the era that she lived in and what was happening in America at the time of her crime, such as political, social and racial movements. The next thing that I will look at is Leslie Van Houten's background and what would influence her to join a cult and leave home at a young age and also what her role was in the murders. Also, I will go over her original sentence and explain why it was overturned. And I will go over how she has been in prison and the criteria that the California department of corrections use when granting parole. Lastly, I will choose whether I believe in …show more content…
Leslie Van Houten was originally from Los Angeles CA, and she grew up in a middle-class family that was stable until her parents divorced when she was 14. After her parents were divorced she changed and started experimenting with drugs like LSD and hashish, she would often run away from home but still was able to graduate high school. Another thing that changed her was that when she was young she got pregnant and her mother forced her into having a miscarriage, this made Leslie hate her mom and she eventually left home for good and joined a commune which led to her joining the hippie movement. In the commune Leslie met some people, one of them was Catherine Share who Leslie was closest with and they moved in with some others creating their own group that ended up not lasting long because some of them didn’t get along with each other. Share left the group and met a guy named Charles Manson and ended up joining his commune. After Share joined Leslie was not

In the case of Brock Turner and his execrable decision to rape an unconscious woman outside a fraternity house at Stanford University is most appalling and like any crime committed the consequence should be given in order that, that particular offender might have time to reflect on what they have done. In this particular case Turner has proven that the term rape is deemed so little in the eyes of the law. Instead of receiving a six year sentence he was simply given six months in an institution. Six years or six months no matter the sentence that young lady will be forever be scarred by what he has done to her physically, and emotionally. In her recent statement she said “My independence”, natural joy, gentleness, and steady lifestyle I had…

Society owes the offender a chance to at a second chance. The purpose of the criminal justice system is to punish people for their crimes and see to it that they turn their lives around. However, they cannot exactly do that when no one helps them once they are released from prison. As a society, we owe the offender the resources that allow them to show they have changed while in prison (for example, a drug addict who was jobless got off drugs and was a hard worker in the prison). If that drug addict comes out with no resources to keep him off drugs, such as helping him to find employment, how can we expect them to not revert to their old ways?…

In my opinion, I feel like an appropriate amount of time for inmates to be in the SHU should depend on what type of crime they committed. For example, if inmates are there because they killed someone then they should be there for 5 years but if they’re there because they raped and killed someone then they do deserve to be there for decades so they can pay and suffer for what they did instead of giving them death penalty or having them in jails or prisons. But I also think about all the side effects it could bring to the inmates and that could make it worst for them, their families, and the other inmates.…

Personally I don’t think that anything can make up for the fact that these individuals have lost out on years of their lives and have been slandered. However, these individuals need assistance transitioning back into society and I think they should be given that on top of any counseling they might need. I also think that their record be completely wiped clean of that crime they were wrongfully convicted of.…

Does a man who killed a family, kids and all, deserve to rot and die in prison? Is it fair to a homeless man to live more meagerly than a convict? In a place like the United States where people have the freedom to speak their minds any topic is fair ground for debate. While the controversial issues like this one raise very diverse and sensitive perspectives from different groups of people. The amount of people that the United States puts into prison has always had a very strong group of opposition but a much less common discussion is the quality of those prisons.Criminal rights are is a very serious topic that is rarely brushed upon. The treatment of the inmates is also a factor towards the opposition of the current criminal justice system.…

    Overpopulation In Prison

It can be agreed, prisons could benefit from proper rehabilitation for inmates, so they can transition into society, without becoming a reoccurring offender. There are different measures that could be taken. If the United States would adopt more of the policies overpopulation and reoccurring offenders could be an issue in the past. If more prisons in the United States could adopt the policies, prisoners would not carry such a burden of a stigma, and begin to be treated as actual members of the…

In cases like these we should look real deep in the case not just because is rape or sexual assault but rather than is the offender may have done this before. Therefore we should consider a bigger punishment for them. We also got to consider that many people that done this type of crimes there old and have committed their first crime. We must think a realize that why are we putting people for their rest of his life in a prison and why we won’t just give him or she a death penalty. We are leaving someone for life in facility he or she is going to live on and die on. Now the elderly offenders are just taking space and money from the facilities. The money and the space can be use for more products to produce and farm to grow their food…. We most do something about it ether at a certain age we released those who In the facility behave good and follow directions we can make them go in work so when they get out of prison. They all ready will have a job to progress in the real world . I been asking these questions to family members, friend, teachers, and students. “What do you think about releasing offenders at age of 65? I got some interesting opinions. Like if they commit some type of crimes like sexual abuse whit a minor, first degree murder. What really cut my eye is that most of the surprising answers where from the students. That the facilities…

The decision to release an inmate early has been a much debated topic for quite some time. Lately, Washington, State’s criminal-justice system, or lack of it has received much criticism from the public because of the tragic death of four Lakewood police officers who lost their lives when an inmate was let out of jail early. Today the question remains whether inmates should be released early or not. Some people believe courts are demonstrating a lack of judicial restraint when rendering a decision to free a violent criminal early from custody. On the other hand, others believe the overcrowding in prisons has put a tremendous financial strain on state budgets. Everyone is at liberty to an opinion, but the truth is there are detrimental consequences when a criminal is put back into society; he or she is a threat to public order, and it is not just non-violent criminals put back into society. Furthermore, in the attempt to reduce overcrowding, early release from prison has caused a tremendous breakdown of the parole and probation system. Inmates have poor supervision, and can walk the streets freely to commit new crimes.…

I believe that in order to rehabilitate prisoners and deter future offenses, a stronger concentration and commitment by the Department of Correctional Services to rehabilitative services needs to be established. We, as a society, should take responsibility for its citizens. Although they have made mistakes, these criminals are victims of societal negligence and should be given the opportunity of rehabilitation, gainful employment, and the chance of normal lives.…

Do I think that some people belong in prison? Absolutely. But I also think that there are also even more people that do not deserve to be there and that’s why we have this problem. Paul Butler Claims, “the criminal justice system gives the state a monopoly on excising…retribution. Its legal hate.” (Butler, 4) This is what I think prosecutors do. They send whoever they want to prison just because they have the authority to do so. I think it is 100% wrong. The justice system is so unjust and erroneous that I think it gives even more power to those involved in working for it than what they actually deserve. Paul Butler says that, In 2008, in a high crime neighborhood in DC, the police would stop any driver and every driver. You were required to answer whether or not you had a…
