What is obesity? Obesity is a condition where a person has accumulated so much body fat that it has caused medical conditions. Two out of every three Americans are now considered to be overweight or obese. More women become more obese in America than men. (30 million men and 36 million women)(Obesity in the U.S). Some people say that it’s not the Government's business that people are overweight. Overweight and obesity are advancing rapidly in the developing world… While other adults, and children are starving in other countries. The United States should take this more seriously.
First, I’m going to talk about the medical conditions of obesity. There are several severe conditions that can affect …show more content…
you. People who are overweight have a greater risk of getting heart disease, type two diabetes, bone and joint disease, and cancer. Coronary heart disease can cause angina or a heart attack. This is caused by plaque building up, blocking or narrowing coronary arteries reducing the blood flow to the heart muscle. Type two diabetes is a disease in which the body’s blood sugar is too high. Diabetes is a leading cause of a stroke, kidney disease, and blindness. Osteoarthritis is a common joint problem of the knees, hip, and lower back. This occurs when the tissue wears away from the joints. Without the tissue protecting the joints, all the extra pressure from the weight causes pain. Being obese can be a risk to some cancers such as colon, breast, and gallbladder.
Second I’m going to talk money.
National Institute of Health is spending $75-$125 billion on indirect and direct costs due to obesity-related diseases(obesity statistics). People that are obese are having to spend a lot of money on healthcare. People spend 4$ to 100$ a month for diabetes medicine, if they are not covered by health insurance(diabetes type 2). A treatment most people do is the insulin pump which cost around $5,000 to $7,000(insulin pump). It checks your insulin, where you don’t have to. This is easier than poking yourself and putting the insulin in yourself. Coronary heart disease medicines range from $8 to $146(heart disease). The effects of the outcomes of obesity is costly to a family.
Lastly, I’m going to talk about what to do about obesity. There are several options to overcome this. One would be exercising, you can go take a walk. Don’t get discouraged if you can’t make it far, your body will be able to do more a little each day. It also helps if you can listen to your music while you exercise. Another thing would be changing your lifestyle. Next time you go to the grocery store, instead of getting junk food get healthier foods. Also, you should join a support group. They’re people just like you, who can motivate you into losing
weight.
To conclude, obesity in the United States is a problem. The government should take this more serious. People are dying from this disease in the United States and no one is doing anything about it. You should really think about your health now, and take care of your body. Remember eat healthy and exercise!
