Today I will be talking about the consequences of smacking children, whether it shall be legalized or not. Also I will bring my own personal response at the end of my speech. But for now, I will begin with why people say it shall be legalized.
Firstly, some parents say that smacking a child teaches them a lesson how to be well disciplined and indirectly tells the child not to commit this deed again. Furthermore, some parents may think that children are having softer punishments such as detention, making them assume they have gotten away with it.
It was stated in the Daily Telegraph on the 17th May 2007 that 8 out of 10 parents would bring the “good old caning” back. The reasons why people or parents are saying this is because children did not commit a bad deed as they were feared of being caned. What’s more is that most parents believe that young children who are smacked go on to be more successful in life.
Some people say that smacking is a form of abuse, but when is it abuse? Smacking in anger, smacking more than once in a row, a smack that leaves mark, these are the times when smacking children becomes against the law.
Now I will state the reasons why people are against smacking children.
As I said before, some parents may think that smacking a child teaches them how to be well disciplined. But, there is a slight problem with this. Other people may believe that smacking a child makes them that that it is permissible to hit others. This smacking could have an effect on a child’s mind such as creating a bond of hatred towards the person who did the smacking. The child may also think of running away from home and befriend others who have been through a similar experience, as well as having more antisocial outbursts.
Not forgetting that it is scientifically proven that smacking a child may have biological effects such as cuts and bruises and it decreases a small amount of brain cells if smacked on the head.
