Should Police officers wear body cameras? Security is a major concern for many Americans across the nation. Police officers are the ones who those people rely on to deliver that sense of security but how can a person be safe if the ones that keep us safe are not the good and just citizens we think they are? To fix the issues of bad cops many police departments are now requiring body cameras. These cameras are supposed to eliminate mistrust in officers and restore peace with the public in places like Ferguson, Mo. And while they have provided a decrease in misconduct by the police and the person involved it is still has many defects. Cops should not wear body cameras because it is a privacy issue, there are too many ‘camera malfunctions’, and it is doing nothing but creating more mistrust in communities. …show more content…
These cameras are direct violations as their rights as American citizens. Some body cameras don’t turn audio recording right away to protect the officer’s privacy but what about the people who are filmed without consent? Police Departments sometimes don’t release videos on the basis of ‘privacy’ especially on controversial cases where they should be available. Police officers do not like being filmed for their privacy issues but they feel it is okay to violate others. The only way that this filming without consent would be appropiate is if the recordings were meaningful and it was shown to those involved and were told that the video was to be shown in an investigation and possibly publicized. But even that still violates people privacy so there is no sure way unless the persons consent is given and most won’t give that. Privacy is a right and not a privilege and it should be respected as
