There are many vitamins and nutrients in flavored milk that children need. Some people will say well strawberry is a flavor of milk and has the same amount of sugar as a cola. Well a lot of that sugar is natural and the nutrients make up for it. According to “Raise your hand for chocolate milk” flavored milk provides 3 out of 5 nutrients missing from most children's diets. In the same video by Dairy Nutrition it shows that the claim I just stated is true. For example in 1 bottle of an off-brand sports drink there are about 7 tsp. of added sugar. In a can of cola there is about 9 tsp. of added sugar, while chocolate milk only contains 3 tsp. of added sugar as well as other nutrients that those and other drinks do not, such as, vitamin D, vitamin A, protein and calcium. Some may argue “No, chocolate milk has 26 grams of sugar” well that may be true but, it only has 3 grams of added sugar the rest are natural sugars.
