For example, Premont High cut all of its sports programs for a year. By the end of the first year of no sports they had an 80 percent passing rate which was up from 50 percent. The students also became more active in helping each other with school work and planning school activities. The lack of sports also increased parent involvement in the school. The Number of parents that attended parent-teacher night was roughly 160, this was up from six parents the year before. Finally, the school was more peaceful fights used to happen every few weeks but after sports were canceled it was rare for a fight to take place. Sports teach children many important lessons about team work and friendship. When the school took away all sports many of the students felt that they did get the full high school experience by being denied a chance to play a sport at the high school level. A few children even started attending a school ten miles away so that they could participate in sports. There were many parents that were unhappy with the school because they felt their children were being denied the “Rite of Passage” of playing on a high school team.
The school started to add sports back into the school the following year. The sports that were added were kept on a much smaller budget then they used to be. This was to ensure that spending on sports was never again taking away from academics. The school also never reinstated its football team because of the overwhelming cost of maintaining a football team. However, they did continue to maintain and improve their academic programs even while starting up their sports teams. In the end it was possible for Premont High School to have a successful academics program while also having a sports
