Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that texting and driving shouldn’t be allowed.
Central Idea: Simple fact on how it puts everyone on danger that’s on the road and how many accidents it creates.
Attention Getter: Imagine your leaving your house on your way to work and you need to drop off your daughter but you receive a text message, so as you are driving you look down and take a look at it but soon you realize it’s far too late and you have already hit the side of the road and it is impossible for you to get out until assistance comes. All this is for a simple text message that would have waited until you hit the “parking brake” on your car. Texting and driving has caused millions of deaths worldwide especially in the United States. …show more content…
According to the “distraction.gov” website, in the year 2010, approximately 3092 people passed away in car accidents that involved a distracted driver, not only this but 416,000 were injured in motor vehicles which involved distracted drivers.
Introduction of Topic: As of right now, around the world there is someone who was involved in a car accident due to texting and driving. Although there are laws which make “texting and driving” illegal, like they say rules are meant to be broken, so therefore many people put their lives at risk for texting and driving. This topic is controversial on both sides of the map because many people believe that it doesn’t cause the driver to be distracted on the road, whereas on an average, when a driver texts and drives at the same time, they look off the road for approximately 4.6 seconds going at a speed of 55mph which is estimated to go across an entire football field with a matter of seconds of looking away (Johnston).
Statement of Credibility/Relevance: As we all know, we see it every day throughout our day while we take a simple ride to the supermarket; school or wherever we’re going, people are constantly looking down at their phone just to send whoever texted them a meaningless message. According to the life before text website in the year 2003, drivers who text and drive contribute about 100,000 crashes per year which leads to the increase of deaths throughout the year.
Thesis: By allowing people to text and drive without getting busted for, it will cause more accidents which could possibly lead to deaths, more danger on the road and danger on the neighborhoods.
Preview: In order to be able to comprehend the dangers of texting and driving, I will go into detail on the statistics which have killed innocent people on the road, the age groups on which have mainly being impacted and how people put their lives at risk for sending a simple texting message that can wait.
Transition: Looking at statistics
Body:
1)
A) As I mentioned before, everyday around the world there is people out there in the streets who are victims of people who text while they drive without knowing the risks on which they put their lives through. Cell phones nowadays have become a huge part of people’s daily lives. Not only do they eat next to their phone, but they also go to the bathroom, sleep or simply use their phone while they are on the wheel. Even though many of you guys will be afraid to admit it if I asked every individual at a time, we all know that at a certain point you took your phone with you to one of those places because you were waiting for what you call an “important” text message. According to the “Texting while Driving Automatic” journal conducted in the beginning of November 2012, a survey of 441 college students was made in a University that most of those students aren’t necessarily aware of their surroundings since they get so into their phones.
B) Did you know that two-thirds of the fatal crashes involved 16year olds?(Louis) This usually is because most 16year olds don’t necessarily know the risks that are involved while texting and driving since they see everyone all around them doing it so they think it’s ok to follow their footsteps. This many of the times could be their parents fault due to the fact that even parents while they’re on the road show their kids this example all for a dumb message who can wait.
C) You may all be thinking that there isn’t a solution to this problem which is affecting people on a daily basis every minute worldwide. But if we start by raising awareness. Just like today I’m trying to make all of you see that you shouldn’t text and drive because you could harm someone out there or simply yourself. What can be done is spread the word and let people see the harms that they put themselves through as soon as they put the key in the ignition.
Transition: Let’s take a look at the age groups which are impacted the most now.
2)
A) You might all think that you live as you learn but what if one day you lose your live in a car accident while you text and drive. Or even more horrible, what if one day you are involved in a car accident where you injured or killed the other person on the car; you will live with that all on your life in your conscious. Or simply picture yourself losing the person you love the most all for a dumb driver who couldn’t wait until the car had stopped.
B) According to the Cellino and Barnes website, in the year 2007, 48% of young Americans anywhere from the ages 12-17 have been involved in a car accident on which the driver happened to be texting and driving.
Could you imagine what the world in a couple of years is going to be like if they don’t put a stop to texting and driving? Even though there is a law which makes it illegal to text while you drive, more awareness needs to be put out there so that people could know the harms on which could be created. 48% is a pretty high percentage; it is almost half of the population worldwide.
C) In order to have a decreased on the fatal crashes that are occurring yearly during teens who are involved in fatal car accidents, I believe that teens that get their license at 16 should have some class sessions where they see the dangers of texting and driving so that they are more aware. Since at 16 most people are very immature and their brain is barely starting to develop. Whereas, most of them get their license and they feel all cool texting and driving without knowing all the risks they’re putting themselves through.
Transition: Have you ever met anyone who has been involved in a distracted driver car
accident?
3)
A) Worldwide there are testimonies from people who have been affected by distracted drivers on the road. For instance, Chance Bothe, experienced the firsthand dangers of texting and driving. He was a man from Texas who was sending a text message to his friends while he was on the road driving home from college. A few seconds later after sending that text message, Bothe veered off a bridge and dropped down a 35-foot-deep ravine (Steve).
B) Luckily this man only suffered injuries but he has to learn how to walk again all because he decided to pick up that phone and send a dumb text message. This wouldn’t have been necessary if he would have had some awareness around him to know the dangers of texting and driving.
C) A solution to stop texting and driving isn’t necessarily easy due to the fact that many people around the world are ignorant and they do whatever they want. They learn until they experience it through their own eyes and their own feet. According to recent research that was made during the year 2007 by the “AAA” association, they have reported that texting and driving is as dangerous as drinking and driving.
Conclusion: As a matter of fact, today I talked to you guys about the risks of texting and driving and how many people are out in danger because they are very impatient when it comes down to sending a text message. Next time you decide to put the keys into your ignition and if you have passengers on the road with you, ask yourself what is worth more, a life or a text message?
