Should The First Church Look Like Today
In the second chapter of Acts, verses 42-47, the way church should look is described in great detail. In this specific passage in Acts, Luke discusses that the first church was devoted to the teachings of the apostles, fellowship with other believers, prayer, and breaking of the bread. Within the church, there were many acts and wonders that left the people in awe. They came together as the body of Christ to serve the poor, attended the temple daily, and praised the Lord for all He had done. The first church in Acts reveals a perfect picture of what the modern church should look like today. Although times have changed and we are no longer practicing some of the same things, the church as a whole should still posses most of the same qualities the first church did as described in Acts 2. …show more content…
I was raised being at church at least three or four days out of the week. My family has always played a major role in our church and for me, church has never been an option. Participating and being a part of the Sunday service, fellowship functions, and even anything service related always took priority over everything else in my life. A typical Sunday morning service at Calvary Bible Church starts with a more traditional style of worship. There will usually be a mixture of hymns and modern songs being sung with a piano, guitar, vocalists, and a small drum set included. Worship at Calvary can at times seem very conservative compared to other services. After worship there is a formal scripture reading and announcements. Kids are then dismissed for a children’s church and the pastor preaches his message. The messages are usually based off of a specific scripture in the Bible and very focused on what the text means and is saying. The service is concluded with another song and then a benediction from the

You can trace Walnut beginnings back to the First Baptist Church of Louisville, founded in 1815, and the Second Baptist Church of Louisville, founded in 1838. The members of these two early Baptist churches joined together in 1848 to form Walnut Street Baptist Church, located downtown Louisville at the corner of 4th and Walnut Street. In the beginning the congregation had 18 members who met primarily in their homes. In 1902, Walnut Street Baptist Church moved to its current location at the corner of Third & St. Catherine. In this week’s review, we seek to gain an understanding of what an organic church model looks like. Cole is the author of our text, Church 3.0 and within this book, he points out how church today has not changed much since the early days and that we in our day and culture need to make some much desired changes as to how we do church. Cole tells us that how we are doing church today in the modern society just isn’t working. We have an abundance of mega churches that attract people to them, but, the truth is, they are just one in a big crowd of people. So, Cole provides us with Church 3.0, an organic, missional way to do and be the church.…

I think Church’s have major responsibilities to communicate the gospel message. We need to remember that it was God’s kindness that saved us. Church’s shouldn’t focus too much flaws and focus more potential. The challenges churches face in today society is how to change with the times so that they can meet human needs without losing a sense of mission and without compromising the central Christian message. Christianity is often misunderstood. Much of the misunderstanding with the local Christian church lies in its inability to be seen as "good" within the local community. The Church by definition is a collection of Christian believers from all over the world and from all times who are bound together by the shed blood of Christ and his resurrected presence. What happens week in and week out in the 4 walls of our churches should be shared with the surrounding community in one way, shape, or form. Churches should feel like a free place that is open to anyone who needs them in any way. It could be simple gestures like offer a public bathroom with a shower during business hours to anyone who needs it. Have church members bring canned foods to service every Sunday and start an open pantry for the local community. It’s these simple things that we take for granted that can have a major positive impact on our local community. Even as we proactively look for ways to reach out to those outside our 4 walls, let’s…

The New Testament begins with Paul’s three missionary journeys, in which his mission was to plant churches and teachings about the Lord. It is safe to say there were many other great church planters after the death of the apostle Paul, such as Peter and John. I plan to elaborate on the main issues facing each of the churches addressed by the General Epistles.…

I arrived at Trinity Church on Sunday between the hours of 11am and 12pm. While I was observing or ‘people watching’ I noticed quite a few people going to and from Trinity Church. Most people were families including mothers, fathers, child or children, while others were just alone. All dressed fairly nicer than the random people walking the streets of New York City. While there were many families I could have observed, I chose one family in particular. The whole family was dressed in what I would describe as their Sunday best. The mother was wearing what seemed to be a turquoise knee-length dress since her big puffy coat was in the way, with black shoes; the father was wearing a black coat and a pair of black slacks and nice shoes, and the little girl I assumed to be their daughter was wearing what appeared as a pink dress or skirt with a pink winter jacket flaunting, white stockings and white shoes. They seemed like a happy family as they walked into the church at approximately 11:10. As I previously mentioned, the family had on their winter coats and jackets. The weather was quite chilly out, the wind making it feel as though it was 30 degrees out. I was sitting there with my winter coat on with a scarf and gloves. Seeming as though it was a Sunday early afternoon, the foot traffic was not too bad, but since mass started at approximately 11:15, many people were making their way into the Trinity Church at this time.…

Many churches are coming up in this era and each of the churches may have a different motive. Churches that are not formed for the sake of the kingdom are not churches of God and will never remain intact. Qualifications for church leadership according to the bible are clearly laid down in the book of Titus and Timothy among other bible books. The New Testament church had leaders who were referred to as deacons, elders and overseers. These titles were given to the leaders according to the tasks that they were supposed to undertake. There are several qualities that the New Testament church used to appoint the local church leaders. Paul addressed Titus on how he was to appoint leaders in every single town. Instructions were given on the qualities to put into consideration for the sake of the church as well as Christ. The qualifications laid down are broadly divided into two namely blamelessness and hospitality. Blameless characteristic is further subdivided into not quick tempered, husband of one wife, among others. On the other hand, the quality of hospitality has components such as loving to do good, discipline,…

According to Morrill, in the Christian tradition, assembly is one of the most important ways that we can connect with Christ. In his Encountering Christ in the Eucharist, he argues that “ The community of faith can only exist through the sharing of that faith, which is focused in its ritual form of worship” (Morrill 21). As a young child I would grow impatient when my mother spent time after Church, with what I viewed as nonsense prattling. Now that I am older, I can see the importance that community is to the Church. Church communities are not only formed when the assembly is participating in the liturgy or service. Additionally, the ways that a Church community fellowships with each other outside of service also builds a sense of community…

For as long as I could remember, church three times a week was a way of life for me. From a very young age, bible scriptures were instilled in me, almost like affirmations that were supposed to wash over me and make sense...They didn't. I learned that God didn't make any mistakes, not to question what I was taught, that God designated me male at birth for a reason. As I got older and began to embark on my gender journey, The scriptures I was taught no longer seemed applicable to my situation. They felt hollow and meaningless to me, because there weren't any specific passages on…

The Baptist worship observation was a totally new experience for me. It was the first time I was stepping out of my comfort zone and attending a service that was not my normal Sunday Mass celebration at my parish. At first, I was a bit worried because it didn’t know what to expect or how to act. However, the experience was gratifying. It was not a worship service that appeals to me; however, I consider that it can be a positive experience for someone searching for a more modern worship service. The community makes you feel welcome from the moment you walk-in, they give you information about their church and their services and are very enthusiastic about making sure they get the message across: they are glad you are there and you are welcome to come again soon. Also, they tell you that no one is perfect and that they want everyone to be welcome to experience the grace of God and His forgiveness in His Son Jesus. They give a very good presentation about their community and what it means to them, but in my personal experience, it lacks the solemnity other churches had.…

I've been attending church for as long as I can remember. The earliest time I remember going to church was when I was in pre-school, and I attended the same church until high school. Sundays were routine, we attended church, went out to eat after with other members of the church, and then went home to watch either football or baseball (sports being my second religion). Skipping church was never an option, nor did I really want to miss it. I had good friends at church, and was genuinely interested in the bible and the stories we read.…

On Sunday morning, grandma would wake us up with the crowing chicken so that we could take baths and have breakfast before attending church. While eating breakfast, she would be finishing up the Sunday dinner which she had already started the night before. The air was filled with the aroma of greens, roast beef, cakes, etc... I don’t know if any of you ever seen the movie Soul Food but grandma would lay a spread out to feed a king. Church, if you know anyone from the south you know that it’s a must you must attend church every Sunday and bible study on Wednesday. We southerners have a pretty long service, some Sundays longer than others, but we enjoy…

1st Timothy 3 contains detailed instructions concerning the church’s organization. When Paul wrote his letter, near the end of his life, he knew the time had come for a more formal organization. The New Testament’s definition of an elder “is to be above reproach” (1st Timothy 3:2 NIV). Elders are the one who is in charge of the governing the appropriate and inappropriate behavior in the church. An elder needs to be a model of Christian advancement and capability. They must have a crucial relationship to God, their family, and everyone and everything that surround them. “Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money”(1st Timothy 3:2-3 NIV). As one continues to read in 1st Timothy 3, Paul also goes into detail the qualifications of deacons. They “are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of faith with a clear conscience”(1st Timothy 3:8-9 NIV).…
