The Hunger Games is a famous novel written by Suzanne Collins, that depicts the true meaning of family and how ones own actions can lead to horrible conclusions if not dealt with properly. This novel takes place in Panem, a country that is divided into twelve districts, with one being the richest and twelve the poorest. Each year, two young tributes from each district are selected by lottery to take part in The Hunger Games. The twenty-four participants are required to kill one another until only one participant remains. When Katniss’ sister, Prim, is chosen at the reaping as District twelve’s participant, Katniss, being the older caring sister, decides to take her place as she knows that her sister is weak, and wont make it through the violent games. Whilst reading the book, one comes across many unknown components that create a sense of mystery, and suspicion. One can look at the title in a literal way, and see that the Hunger Games is plainly an annual competition carried out to remind the districts of the past rebellion that was held against the government, or to prove to the districts that the government has greater power over the citizens. As for the second interpretation, one can read deeper into the title and see that Katniss’s life is actually very similar to the Hunger Games. It is a life of struggle and fighting against poverty and starvation, where she is forced to go hunting every day to bring home food.
