Should There Be a Ban on Smoking?
October 26, 2009
Should There Be A Ban On Public Smoking? In the early 1990’s, people finally realized that the habit that had been crazed about throughout history is seriously bad on their health. This horrible habit is smoking. Smoking causes a huge amount of damage to one’s body, as well as affecting other people. Bans on smoking should be placed in effect in all states of the United States.
Already in several different states, representatives have attempted to pass a law banning smoking in all public places. This is a wonderful idea that could solve many issues people have with their health. There are so many harmful results of smoking, but the most deadly is lung cancer. Less harmful issues include asthma, respiratory problems, heart problems, ugly stained teeth, bad breath, and constantly smelling like cigarette smoke.
Results of smoking not only affect the smoker, but they also affect non-smokers who live or work with smokers. Secondhand smoke is a leading cause in lung cancer among non-smokers. In public places such as restaurants or workplaces that allow smoking, non-smokers are exposed to a very large amount of smoke toxins. Many people argue that inside smoking is acceptable as long as there are smoking and non-smoking sections. In my opinion, having a smoking section inside a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a pool; it doesn’t prevent the non-smokers from inhaling cigarette smoke.
The many people who want a ban on smoking should call or mail their state representative so that bans can be passed. I believe that if smoking outside of private property should be completely banned under penalty of fines. Cigarette smoke causes health problems for those who aren’t even participating in said habit. Non-smokers should not have to pay a price on their health just because someone they are around has a nasty habit.

Smoking cigarettes can cause lung problems. Both first-hand and second-hand smokers are affected by cigarette smoke. Scientific findings and researches show that the chemicals in cigarettes, apart from the smoke, can lead to health problems such as lung cancer. Smoking cigarettes should be banned in public places. In public places, more people, both young and old, can be exposed to the smoke from cigarettes. My position differs from those who might say that smoking altogether should not be banned. My position is that smoking in public places should be banned. It does not include smoking in private places like homes. Smoking in public places should be banned because it poses health risks to individuals who are non-smokers and who do not want to inhale the fumes from cigarettes. The risks are double to those who already have lung ailments.…

As we all know smoking causes death, it causes death more than HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined. It causes lung cancer deaths in men and women. 90% of men and 80% of women die from lung cancer each year that percentage is way too high. Something needs to be done about cigarette smoking as soon as possible. The world allows cigarette smoking to continue on, they try to ban it in certain areas but allow it to be done in other areas. For example at many colleges they do not allow you to smoke on the premises of the school grounds, but they will allow you to smoke as long as you are in your car with the windows rolled up. That makes no sense at all, you are still smoking on school grounds and nobody ever abides the rules anyways. They will smoke in their cars but with the windows down, or they will just smoke on school grounds. The same goes for work buildings, big businesses, high schools, and etc. Cigarette smoking needs to be banned!…

Tobacco smoke can be offensive to a majority of restaurant customers; does that mean smoking should be outlawed in all eating establishments? The principle of liberty would say the smoker has the right to smoke but conversely the non smoker customer has the right to dine and not be overwhelmed by tobacco smoke. Instead of outlawing smoking in all restaurants allow the free market to settle the debate. The spots bar owner who desires to attract a large number of customers can offer a nonsmoking dining area and another section for smokers. The second dining area room would be separated and could include a strong ventilation system pulling the tobacco smoke out. Next door the owner of another sports bar can choose to make it a nonsmoking establishment. Each business owner accepts the effects of their choice realizing either way some potential customers won’t feel welcomed.…

Smoking should be banned in public places such as hospitals, post offices and airports. Smokers want to smoke wherever they want, and they do not care about people surrounding. This reason makes non-smokers get lung and respiratory diseases. For example, children inhale smoke for a long time, they will get respiratory disease or asthma. Finally, people feel annoyed when someone around them smokes. The first reason is that non-smokers do not like to breathe polluted air. For instance, when you enjoy the meal in a restaurant, you suddenly inhale the smoke from the neighbor. You will feel uncomfortable. It also spoils your appetite. Another reason is that air is polluted. Smoke of a cigarette has a lot of poisonous chemicals such as carbon monoxide, lead and tar. Therefore, you can consider how smoking affects the health.…
