is riddled with disrespect towards the First Nations people. We have taken their land, placed them on reserves of poor quality, and have attempted to assimilate them many times. The government has made many contracts with the theme, called treaties, that have been used to accommodate them. To further accommodate them we have tried to improve the quality of reserves. To do this we have funded social programs created in the Indian Act. These social programs have improved life on a reserve, but there are still problems, mainly drug addiction and unemployment. This has increased the suicide rate in aboriginal people. A lot of the personal problems of adult aboriginal people are often because of residential schools, which was an attempt to assimilate aboriginal children. The children have often been verbally, physically, and sexually assaulted. We have since issued an official apology that was delivered by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on June.11 2008. In addition we have given monetary compensation to many of the former students of these schools. This is a short list of the accommodations we have made to the First Nations people. I think that they were necessary after the problems we have caused them. Protecting their culture is important, as they take pride in it, so we have created classes within our school systems which can allow you to study their culture, you can also take Cree as a second language.
Cree being taught as a language is important to preserve the First Nation’s culture, but it is not an official language. The official languages of Canada are English and French. So to live in Canada you must speak one or both of these languages. You can still speak a language that is not English or French but you will not be punished for it but you won’t be able to get a job with the government just speaking your language. Some refugees though are not able to speak English or French so they are able to take classes once they arrive in Canada. Essentially, for those who immigrate as a skilled worker must already know at least one of our official languages, while refugees who are here by necessity and do not know English or French are taught as they need this accommodation or they will not be successful in Canada. The refugees from Syria are mostly the ones who are receiving this education. The fact they are fleeing a war is what makes these accommodations so necessary, as we want them to be successful here, and we don’t want to send them back. The Syrians are leaving their home country due to a conflict between the Syrian government and ISIS, who wants to create an Islamic state and impose Sharia Law which is rather barbaric.
The accommodation of religious views is very important. But what if those religious views are rather extreme, what if they believe in harming other people? This very issue has come up before in Canada, it took the form of a Mormon sect called the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or FLDS for short). It was started by a man named Warren Jeffs, he believed in having polygamous relationships with young women, some under 14 years old. The government decided that we could not accommodate these practices, but it was hard to stop due to our constitution allowing religious freedom. The FLDS was found later not to be protected, as the right to have security of person was being infringed upon. I think this use of precedence in our constitution is important, as it won’t stop a religion of peace, but it will stop one that causes harm. I think it is very important to accommodate religion as it is a big part of one's culture, but I think that it depends on the sect. There are bad parts of every religion, the FLDS is part of the mormon church, whether other mormons like it or say they denounce them, but not all mormons agree with the FLDS’ values. Nowadays when people think of sects of a religion that have become rather extreme, they think of Muslims due to the conflict in the middle east. The government still accommodates Muslims as they have the right to follow their religion and most will not cause harm upon another person, so I believe we should accommodate them as a very small percentage of the Muslim population (about 0.006625%), but it’s popular right now as it is causing refugees from Syria to come to Canada.
The refugees from Syria are fleeing from a civil war between ISIS and the Syrian government. Although it isn’t much of a civil war as Russia is involved and a lot of ISIS soldiers aren’t from Syria. This conflict has amassed about 450 000 casualties so far, this shows that the people fleeing to Canada and other safe countries are escaping from a very dangerous area. The people of Syria need help because if they don’t get it the likelihood of death is very high. These people need accommodations to be made, as not all of them speak English, and a lot of them have some form of disability, which is understandable as they are coming from a warzone where bombings are prevalent. Since Canada is not being torn apart by war, has a good economy, and the ability to take in more immigrants (if anything we are dependent on it as our birth rate is low) we have a responsibility to help these people as they aren’t exactly in a position to do anything but flee. As I have stated before, they can’t all speak English, and some are disabled, but we must accommodate these people as it is the right thing to do. The Canadian government has actually made accommodations, they will send you to classes to learn English or French, and make find ways to help the disabled the best they can. Another way we help the refugees once they arrive is we sponsor them for up to a year and we do our best to find them a job, they aren’t always jobs in their fields of work but they can often find one in a year or two. It is important for these accommodations to be made as without them, the chance for a successful life in Canada would be slim to none. Canada takes in refugees as, not only is it the right thing to do, we have some history with having essentially killing 10 000 refugees because we sent them back.
Canada is a country that takes in refugees where it can and helps them merge into our society.
I believe that this is very important not only to these refugees, but what Canada stands for. We stand for freedom and equality, whether someone was born here or not is of no consequence to them. We help those who need the best we can, we weren’t always so helpful though. Once in 1938 Jewish refugees who were fleeing from Nazi rule had requested refugee status in Canada, the Canadian government refused to accommodate these people who had requested our help. This refusal to help was essentially a death sentence for all those who applied. From then on we have helped as many as we could, as we have learned from our mistake. Our helpfulness is very important, we are peace keepers above all else while in conflict, if anything it is one of the biggest factors in all Canadian
nationality.
I think we should accommodate as much as possible, but reject when necessary. I think that helping is the biggest part of being Canadian, and stopping those who choose to do harm unto others is part of that, I think we should apply this to all problems, both foreign and domestic. Whether it is Syrians seeking asylum, or children being married off to religious leaders, Canadians always accommodate and will do all that is possible to end these struggles. In the end I think Canada will always be a place for peace keeping, acceptance, and freedom.
