Shovel Point Research Paper
Dangling over the ice cold waves of Lake Superior with my shaking hands gripping a small ledge on Shovel Point. My family decided to take a little trip up to the north shore, camping at Tettegouche State Park, which included a day trip to Shovel Point. Our instructor, a tall man with a backpack full of water, ropes, helmets, and carabiners, met us at the ranger station. There he introduced himself with a friendly “hello”. I could I feel my heart pick up its pace as we began to walk. The walk was hot, uneven, and long. Not only was my heart beating faster because of the walk, but because I knew what the destination was. This long, grueling walk led us to Shovel Point. Shovel Point is a rocky, steep cliff overlooking Lake Superior. It was the …show more content…
Once I felt as though I could do it, I let my heart rate settle a little bit and then walked towards the daunting ledge. I looked over the ledge at the water below and had to take one step back and regroup. I was trying to drown out the members of my family who were saying things like “you can do it!”,“You’re almost there” and, “I believe in you”, but after hearing those things I realized it was much needed, it gave me a boost of confidence. I walked back to the ledge, turned my back to the open water, and faced the gigantic rock I would be attempting to climb down. I gripped my hands tightly on the cold rock and moved one foot down the side until I found a small ledge I could rest my foot on. The only thing that was going through my mind was the possibility of the rope holding my weight, preventing me from falling, could break and I would fall and hit the hard rocks below me. Hot tears were streaming down my bright red face, I was looking up at my family through my vision blurred with tears of

Everest including images to better visualize the text. The author first begins the story in the middle when they are returning to the bottom of the mountain. He tells who didn’t survive or who had contracted a fatal injury he then continues to tell us about the impact of the challenge “… to the tragedy the Everest climb has rocked my LIFE to its core …” (Pg. 3). This quote reflects his perspective on the expedition. His vivid figurative language and exquisite imagery pertaining to every event made the passage not only highly realistic but parallel . It was as if the reader was with him and they struggles and felt lightheaded and experienced the same minor injuries. Although the author was advised not to pursue the expidition, he ignored and continued to walk in his ambitions. “Finally I woke up enough to recognize that I was in deep shit and the cavalry wasn't coming so I better do something about it myself” (Chpt. 20). This quote portrays his perspective on his situation and how he feels about the potential overall outcome of his actions. This quote also reflects his personality as a strong-willed individual. He was able to single handedly accomplish getting to base 4 half-frozen on the verge of death. Not only did he rely on teammates that left but was able to live using strength and determination with his mighty…

“I can’t believe I’m doing this” I mutter into my wooly scarf. It’s 4 o’clock in the afternoon and the weather reads ten degrees Fahrenheit. I shift my weight and try to get into a more comfortable squatting position as the rocks dig into my boots. I look around; it’s a rather dreary day with no clouds in sight. I scribble in a notepad. Five minutes in and my hands are numb.…

The journey to Mooney’s Bay felt inevitably long as I was anxious throughout the whole trip. We finally arrived at Mooney’s Bay and towed our toboggans up the hill. On my first ride down the hill, I shut my eyes as tightly as possible. I felt wind cutting across my face like a knife as we charged down the hill like horses without reins.…

The sun shone vibrantly through the trees and I loved the way it complemented the gold leaves. I started to notice the incline to the top of the hill, it was steady unlike the Adirondacks where you go up and down. When I got to the top I saw a spectacular view of the surrounding neighborhoods and way in the distance I saw the buildings of Rochester. As I stood there I admired the pure beauty that lies so close to home. It is hard to believe that a wilderness like this one could be surrounded by suburban neighborhoods. Being higher up and in an open space I could really appreciate the mixture of golds, oranges and yellows it was different than being on regular ground level. I thought to myself ‘’I should do this more often, it’s peaceful and healthy.’’ I felt a certain peace with in me while I’m in the woods, suddenly my phone vibration broke my train of thought. It was my stepmom texting me to see if everything was okay, I replied yes and I’d be back at the trailhead in a short time. The leaves snapped and cracked under my feet on the way back and the crisp fall air made the not yet fallen leaves dance in the trees, it was getting later in the day. I was three quarters through the loop so I was still fine,I wasn’t…

But as I cautiously looked down, making sure my neck was the only part of my body that turned; I felt that the way down looked scarier than the way up. And then there was my conscience that kept egging me on towards accomplishing something that very few have been able to. When I couldn't battle with it any longer, I gave into it. With a half empty water bottle and a soul strengthened with courage and vigour, I continued the…

But what I really struggled with was the health conditions I was putting myself into. For ten days, I was working on my feet, serving food, cleaning, feeding, and then when I wasn’t doing all of that, I was walking around, exploring New York City! Now, while that does not sound bad or painful at all, think about this. On your feet walking and walking for nine straight hours for eight days. My body was sore. I felt as if my body was going to start falling apart bone by bone. I cried a few times because of how much pain my body was in. But that didn’t stop me from having a good time! I just had to keep telling myself that it was for a good cause. I was doing that because it was making a difference in life and as long as I kept that thought and motivation on my mind, I knew I was going to make it through the week. I never gave up, I never quit believing in myself, and I managed my emotions very…

This was my first time and I was extremely nervous to go to the top because I am scarcely afraid of heights. I recall walking to the top and saying to my friends, ‘I do not think I can do this. It goes too high.’ They just kept telling me, ‘Just try it once. I promise it will be fun.’ So what we decided to do was start lower and go to the halfway point. This is where many of the younger children went with their parents. So a few of my friends and I went to the half way point and all got in the water and on the inner tubes. We were all holding hands staying connected as we floated down the stream. The ride down the half jump was sufficient. Through the clear water, I could see the sharp, jagged rocks sitting there just waiting to jump into someone’s leg. But on the lower level of the stream, the water was calm and just barely kept the rafts moving. So then after we got to the bottom of the torrent, my friends talked me into trying the big drop. I was terrified to complete this task, but with my friends, I knew I could accomplish anything. So we walked to the top of the creek and rode down the drop individually. Before the four foot drop, I almost flipped my raft, but I had the balance to keep myself from flipping. Then, once we all hit the drop, I was the only one who flipped. My knee did hit a rock but I did not feel it until later on towards the end of the stream. However, I did not cut my knee open, it just scraped a tad and bruised and knotted…

I had been canoeing many times before, but little did I know this trip would be unlike any other. It was a sunny July morning and me and my friends loaded up the SUV and headed for the river. The closer we got, the larger the knots in my stomach became. I couldn’t tell if the knots where there from nerves or the excitement, all I knew is that I could not wait to get the canoe in the water. We reached the old wooded building surrounded by orange and gray faded canoes and began to unload our supplies that would get us through the day.…

I didn't know how far the beach was, or how treacherous the walk would be, and if I'd known I probably wouldn't have agreed to the trek. It was dark, and under the cover of thick, old, massive trees, it was cold and difficult to see much of anything. I fell a few times on the tree branch stairs before Jakob found me, grabbed my hand, and escorted me the 30 or so minutes down the trail.…

As we continued our drive, I noticed that the creek was looking nice that day, probably because of the blazing weather. We approached a crowd, and I was already pumped to finally escape the heat. But as we approached the place we were going to swim, Henry said to me “I hope you’re not afraid of heights”. At this point I thought he was kidding but then I saw the rock, and I thought differently. The rock is an understatement. It was probably about 20 feet high and I told Henry there was no way in hell I was jumping off of it. I knew there was no possible way he could convince me to make the leap. Unbelievably he did though,…

I make my way over the grass, which is covered in freckles of frost that make a soft crunch with each tiny step I take. The trees that surround me are clustered together in company, yet look lonely without their companionship of leaves. They stand tall and strong, like an army of ghost warriors that are ready for battle. I walk amongst them, lightly brushing against the rough and unkind bark as I go. There’s no sign of life in the park besides myself and the typical flock of gulls. I breathe in the nippy winter air through my nostrils, taking in the usual smell of gasoline and hot dogs. My feathers ruffle, as the light gust of cool air tickles me, making me look like a rabid animal. New Yorkers, both young and old, now jog past me with the reflection of the frosty sun glistening off of their foreheads. They don’t see me peering up at them in wonder, but I most definitely see them.…
