Shunning In The Scarlet Letter
The most unexpected individual to be shunned by society is a smiling, recognizable face of American television. Shunning has been an integral part of human society from its inception, when man first left behind individual lifestyles and banded together to create the precursors to modern civilization. All cultures, societies, and civilizations contain those that would seem unwanted, which ultimately results in the shunning of individuals. When a community shuns a citizen within it, it is because the said individual has been marked by society, most likely due to their actions or their heritage. This demarcation of an individual puts them on a pedestal before their peers, on which their actions are constantly monitored. The publicity of celebrity lives often offers a greater chance to be shunned by society. The pitchman of Shamwow and Slap-Chop products, Vince Shlomi, experienced such degradation when he was arrested and publicly humiliated after assaulting a prostitute. It’s an unfortunate …show more content…
Although the instance of Sholmi and the prostitute happened centuries later, the social response was comparable. In both early and modern societies, the shunning of the individual is a community effort with instant and long term effects that change how the world is viewed by those who are shunned. In the case of Shlomi, he first faced arrest with the assault charge (Smoking Gun), in the long run Shlomi lost all credit and ability to go back to his previous career of television advertisement. He has not been in any running commercials since the incident. As if the public humiliation wasn’t enough, he was then marked as a social pariah. Shlomi has not attempted to regain his social status, and remains shunned. Thus, his status has yet to change. The immoral act committed lead to a fast-paced downfall of popularity, much like

In this passage Dimmesdale is speaking about Pearl standing on the other side of the stream refusing to go to him and Hester. The contrast between Pearl standing on the opposite side as them parallels the contrast in their lives. Hester, now not wearing the scarlet letter, and Dimmesdale are concealing their relationship and their sin in the forest, representing a world of secrecy. Pearl, however, is representing a world of truth by refusing to join them until Hester once again wears the ‘A’, which throughout the book has been Hester’s truth. The two separate worlds that they’re a part of cannot come together until they change; Dimmesdale wants Pearl to be the one to change by joining them in their new plan to escape to Europe and by joining them in their lie. Pearl however refuses to be with them until they join her in her truth. This is exemplified by Pearl not going to her mother until she wears the ‘A’ and by Pearl rejecting Dimmesdale. Pearl washes off Dimmesdale’s kiss after he once again refuses to hold their hands in public, showing yet again how much she rejects dishonesty. Dimmesdale refers to Pearl as an elf which is defined as, “one of a class of preternatural beings, especially from mountainous regions, with magical powers, given to capricious and often mischievous interference in human affairs, and usually imagined to be a diminutive being in human form”. This parallels to Pearl’s character very well because she is very capricious, her mood often changes very quickly and she can be really unpredictable also throughout the book she seems to be meddling in the affairs of Dimmesdale and Hester by not allowing them to live in secrecy. When Dimmesdale says Hester can never meet Pearl again it shows a strong divide between Hester and Pearl as Pearl is still very innocent and pure while her mother is conveyed as a sinner, similar to the way…

Throughout The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne establishes the character Pearl as having tenacity and peculiarity in her personality and traits. First, Nathaniel Hawthorne exaggerates Pearl’s qualities to establish her as an odd child and a separate person from the Puritan town she lives in. In chapter 7, after the governor asks Pearl who created her, she answers by saying ‘no one created her rather her mother plucked her from a wild rose bush near the prison.’ Hawthorne follows Pearl’s remark with, “This fantasy was probably suggest by the near proximity of the Governor’s red roses, as Pearl stood outside of the window; together with her recollection of the prison rose bush, which she had passed in coming hither.” (Pg. 77) Adults are not…

Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the isolation of Hester , Dimmesdale , and Pearl to express the toxic and unfair treatment Puritans values have put upon certain individuals throughout the era of their existence and the scaring aftermath leading to those who have been affected by it. “The main image of this evil that threatens a whole community can be found in the mysterious figure of the Black Man. Hawthorne, as the author, never makes a statement as to his existence; all references to him exist simply in the mouths of the characters. From them one can gather that he lives in the forest, outside of the city, and that he carries a book and an iron pen which he offers to those whom he meets. If they inscribe their names, in blood, he places his mark…

“ 1988, I lost my reputation and my dignity. I lost almost everything, and I almost lost my life.” Monica Lewinsky is a woman that was affected by public shaming. Public Shaming is a consequence that is served when a human makes a mistake. Often it is a crime that is legal and people still get persecuted. The three sources that support my claim is the scarlet letter, Monica Lewinsky, and Justine Sacco’s issue. These sources display negative effects of public shaming towards the people is unjust. Isolation, pride and guilt are all themes Heathrow used in The Scarlet Letter. Hester and Dimmesdale are good examples of the theme of isolation. In the previous chapter, we see them leaving their home to have a better future together as a family. In this chapter, they were getting a boat ride to leave the area to start a new life as a family. This resulted in them still being quite isolated from the “real world”. You can also see the theme of pride in this chapter through Dimsdale. Dimsdale is going back to some of the memorable moments, both good and bad, before the scarlet letter issue and reflects. “..and [the girl was] won by the Reverend Mr. Dimmesdale's own sermon” is a good quote to show his pride. In context, this quote seems like…

    Adultery In Scarlet Letter

After reading the Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne I came to believe that Adultery is a terrible thing and can have very bad repercussions, especially in the early to mid 1700s. Back then committing adultery was a very serious offense to not the just the community but to your family also. Adultery used to destroy family relationships and to this day it still does. Adultery is also more of a religious problem but also goes into social and legal consequences. When it talks about social consequences it is things like being exposed to the whole town and everyone knows what you did, things were very strict when it came to adultery. Not only were you exposed but because adultery was taking so seriously, whoever committed the crime could be incarcerated,…

In The Scarlett Letter the three main characters, Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Hester Prynne, are all accused of committing a sin, because of Theology a crime, in their Puritan society. Chillingworth is alleged of being “devilish”, Dimmesdale of lacking courage and having an intimate relationship with a married woman, and finally Hester Prynne of committing adultery. Out of these three, who is the guiltiest? In my opinion, Chillingworth is the guiltiest of these three because he, unlike Dimmesdale and Hester who did what they did for love, committed his crimes in a way in an “evil” way, he took advantage of a young and thus inexperienced, woman, and he tortured his wife’s lover in a way that would kill him of guilt.…
