The phrase “Know thyself” applies to the situations and stages in Siddhartha’s life as he goes through his quest. As he travels he learns new things and decides what he believes is true and what he disagrees with. An example would be when Siddhartha went to seek Buddha. As Siddhartha and Govinda travelled with the Samanas they heard of a man named Buddha and decided to find out who this man was. They sat and listened to him speak about the eight fold path and other things related to Buddhism. At the end Govinda decides to convert to Buddhism, while Siddhartha rejects his teachings and decides that what Buddha taught was something that he disagreed with. This scene shows how Siddhartha believes that he doesn’t agree with what the Buddha says.
