Sigmund Freud developed Psychodynamic theory which gave a detailed description of the levels of awareness preconscious, conscious and unconscious in simple terms what is going on in the mind of an individual or to get in the head of an individual to see what is going on in the unconscious part of the mind. Psychodynamic theory gave insight on how the feelings and thoughts of individuals can affect the actions that they take on a daily basis.
Today, this theory is efficaciously used by many psychotherapists since it helps the patients to understand their feelings. Psychodynamic helps to treat depression, a prevalent illness in our society. There are three distinguishing parts of human personality according to Sigmund Freud Psychodynamic theory: the superego, the ego and the id. The superego Freud defines it as “a voice of conscience”. The ego which is represented by the individual’s conscience mind. It is connected with …show more content…
the individual’s thoughts, memories and judgments. The id is related to biological needs such as hunger, thirst, sex and so on. It provides energy for all systems of human body. It is known that Freud used his knowledge and experiences in thermodynamics in order to apply them to his Psychodynamic theory. Thus, the first law of thermodynamics which states that “energy can neither be created nor destroyed” was applied to the main concepts of Freud’s Psychodynamic theory. He studied human personality and human emotions “as a form of physical energy”. Sigmund Freud was sure that physical energy concerning human personality can be transformed from one state to another but it cannot be created or destroyed. According to his theory, most personalities are shaped on the basis of their childhood experiences. Freud states that any individual passes some psychosexual stages from his or her childbirth to puberty. Moreover, “the pleasure seeking energy” of id focuses on different “pleasure sensitive zones” of the human body during different stages of life. The psychosexual stages of life of any individual include the following ones:
Stage Origin of libido and sources of pleasure Key events and influences Result of fixation
Oral The mouth. Sucking, chewing, swallowing, and biting Breastfeeding. Weaning onto solid food. Ego is created. Smoking, nail biting, dependency, aggression.
Anal The anus. Withholding, expelling and playing with feces. Potty training. Messiness and generosity or obsessiveness, tidiness and meanness
Phallic The penis or clitoris. Masturbation. The Oedipus and Elektra complexes. Superego and gender identity are created. Vanity and self-centeredness; anxiety and self-doubt.
Latent Little or no sexual motivation. Acquiring knowledge and understanding of the world.
Genital The penis or vagina. Heterosexual intercourse. ‘Normal’ adult personality and sexuality.
The one stage that I can relate too is the oral stage.
Ever since I was a kid I have the bad habit of nail biting. I believe that my nail biting started at age five till at times today. When I was younger my mother and aunts offered me the world to stop biting my nails but nothing worked. I believe that I bite my nails when I am stressed it comforts to me. Most of the time I have on fake nails to prevent me from biting them. I put on the fake nails because when I bite my nails I hurt myself to the point that I can even touch anything because my fingers are too tender. I can say that that last couple of months I have been behaving with this bad habit. I’ve been trying really hard not to bite my nails so that I don’t have put on the fake nails. Sometimes when I bite my nails I am embarrassed to show my hands because they look very ugly. When I was younger my mother tried so many treatments to prevent me from biting my nails. The treatments were bitter nail polish, hot sauce on my fingers to a point she put gloves on my hands 24
hours.
