Counsellors do not offer advice as such but instead give an insight into a client’s feelings and behaviour and they help the client to change their behaviour accordingly. They do this by actively listening to what the client has to say and comment from a professional perspective. Counsellors are trained to be effective helpers, especially in sensitive and difficult situations. They have to be independent, very neutral and professional as well as respecting the privacy and confidentiality of a client. Counselling can help clients to clarify their problems, identify the changes they wish to make and give them a fresh perspective. Counsellors should help them to seek other options and look at the impact that life events have made on the client’s emotional wellbeing. They also help clients to come to terms with difficult issues and it works best if the client comes to counselling from their own free will.…

Counselling requires professional training and is specifically contracted or explicitly agreed. It has a theoretical base and uses specific methods within an ethical framework. The relationship between the counsellor and the client is built upon mutual expectation and is central to the process of the client under-going significant change in their lives.…

This unit focuses on the identification, practice and development of a range of interpersonal and counselling skills. Learners will develop the underpinning knowledge and ability to initiate, sustain and conclude an interaction with a client/patient, beyond that of being an effective listener to the level of skilled helper. They will understand and practise the parameters of the skills utilised in such helping relationships, including managing the process and, where necessary, referring the client to alternative sources of support. It is important to note that on completion of this unit learners are not qualified to undertake client work in a counselling context. An extensive programme of additional, higher level study and commitment to a period of personal therapy are required in order to become a counselling practitioner, eligible for professional body membership and/or accreditation. Effective listening and questioning techniques, and adherence…

This counseling method is mainly used to treat clients with depression and anxiety. This counsling approach helps adapt new behaviors and thoughts.…

In the assessment stage the very foundation of the counselling function begins. Through using solid counselling skills such as making good eye contact, asking open ended questions, using continuation responses and expanding techniques I would begin to form a picture of the client’s abilities, values, personality, and interests. This process would be enhanced by the introduction of testing into the formula. The holistic approach I would advocate serves to better the client’s needs as whole, not just career…

This type is termed and described as clinical by Williamson. It consists of one process and one treatment. Directive counseling allows the counselor to give the counselee information about himself, his opportunities, and his problems. The method enables the counselor to provide the counselee with needed assistance in making the many choices, plans, adjustments, and interpretations which are essential parts of the educational experience. The most distinctive feature of the directive counseling method is the tendency of the counselor to focus first attention upon the counselee’s problem. He may lead in the conversation, point out inconsistencies, or suggest the action to take. The counselor guides the discussion through:…
