A pair of silk stockings Essay

The story's main character is Mrs. Sommers, a wife and mother. Her family is very poor, and she is trying to pick up a few items of clothing for her children. On this particular day, she is tired and worn out as she goes about her errands. She is an expert at finding bargains and saving money, always looking for a good sale, but she finds a pair of silk stockings that she desires for herself. They feel nice against her skin, and the store has several in her size and in various colors. The purpose of this essay is to show the quiet struggle of a woman searching for a balance between family life and personal satisfaction.

Little Mrs. Sommers one day found herself the unexpected possessor of fifteen dollars. It seemed to her a very large amount of money, and the way in which it stuffed and bulged her worn old porte-monnaie gave her a feeling of importance such as she had not enjoyed for years. The question of investment was one that occupied her greatly. For a day or two she walked about apparently in a dreamy state, but really absorbed in speculation and calculation. She did not wish to act hastily, to do anything she might afterward regret. But it was during the still hours of the night when she lay awake revolving plans in her mind that she seemed to see her way clearly toward a proper and judicious use of the money. if she was a traditional mother she should spend only some of the fifteen dollars.

A dollar or two should be added to the price usually paid for Janie's shoes, which would insure their lasting an appreciable time longer than they usually did. She would buy so and so many yardsof percale for new shirt waists for the boys and Janie and Mag. She had intended to make the old ones do by skilful patching. Mag should have another gown. She had seen some beautiful patterns, veritable bargains in the shop windows. And

For weeks I pondered how each came to be on the wrong foot.”…

The gender power struggle is depicted in the foreground. A man and a woman, presumably spouses, tug over a pair of pants, the quintessential symbol of male power and dominance, particularly in 19th century America, where the traditional costume for women was the Victorian gown. By quarrelling over the pair of pants, the man and the woman metaphorically dispute for authority and control in a male-dominated society. While the husband argues that the “man ought always to be the ruler”, his wife retorts that women were not born to “obey these contemptible creature called…

Even though her childhood was not very enjoyable, her parents try to make it up by obtaining jobs so they could have the bare essentials. Jeanette’s father, who is extremely intelligent, worked in the barite mine as an electrician trying to bring home a stable income for his family to ensure the best success for his kids. “ The barite mine where Dad worked had a commissary, and the mine owner deducted our bill and the rent for the depot out of Dad’s paycheck every month. At the beginning of each week, we went to the commissary and brought home bags and bags of food” (Walls 56). The effect of getting money to pay for food was huge for this family because when they had no money left, their kids would go through the garbage and trying to find leftover food from others to ensure they don’t get hungry. Jeanette’s parents are the only source of income and if his father lost his…

The text shows the human condition through the necessity of money. For example, right here shows us the realities of money when it says “what things cost and what our parents make and how much goes for rent and how money ain’t divided right in this country”.(37) The children compare the 1000 dollar boat to how the 1ooo dollars could feed them all together for a year. Ms. Monroe encourages them to think about the value of money when she says, “Imagine for a minute what kind of society it is in which some people can spend on a toy what it would cost to feed a family of six or seven” (178). I agree with the children that the price for toys is unbelievable and outrageous. The value of money depends on if you’re poor or rich. What the poor use money for is stuff like food and rent and 1 dollar boats you make yourself; Unlike the rich who gets to use money for luxuries like 1000 boats and fur coats. For the children it’s all about social standing and “where we are is who we are” (162). Money is a necessity whether you’re rich or poor.…

This short story is set during the late nineteenth century. The setting in which this work is taking place gives the reader the idea that Mrs. Mallard was stereotypically known as a week and emotional woman. Women during the 19th century spent most of their day at home, while men would be the ones that typically worked and went out to fulfill financial needs for a family. The reader can infer that even though Mrs. Mallards marriage was like an ordinary marriage of the time, she felt as if she was being forced to feel satisfied.…
