As Micaela Applegate states, “I think Americans are more open to expressing their individuality and therefore have a larger array of music. I like a different variety of music from pop, rock, jazz, to hip hop.” Even if people don’t like a certain genre, there are so many other different genres that there is something for everyone. Although the world is very receptive of American music, America is not as receptive of foreign music. Unlike most countries, a majority of Americans speak only one language, and therefore they are less likely to listen to foreign music. The music has been like this for a very long time, and has only recently become popular in the United States. Dance music started its popularity in Europe in the late ‘80s and has not become less popular since. In America, dance music was introduced in the ‘80s, but became unpopular and almost a pariah. Laws were passed banning unlicensed dance parties and parties that involved drug paraphernalia, which almost directly targeted the dance scene.
