In the book, the way many characters are described did not match how they were portrayed in the movie.
For example, Hermione Granger is supposed to have buck teeth and bushy brown hair, but in the movie she is portrayed by Emma Watson who looked nothing like that. Next, Harry Potter is supposed to be wicked skinny with unruly messy hair, Daniel Radcliffe had straight hair and an average physique. Professor Snape said to Harry, "'For your information, Potter, asphodel and wormwood make a sleeping potion so powerful it is known as the Draught of Living Death. A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat and it will save you from most poisons. As for monkshood and Wolfsbane, they are the same plant, which also goes by the name of aconite. Well? Why aren't you all copying that down?'" (138). Severus Snape was the only character that was accurate and very well portrayed. Many parts in the movie were inaccurate to the book as
well. The movie sort of twisted the story of Harry Potter a bit. For example, in the book when the letters started coming, Uncle Vernon gave Harry a different room so the owls would get confused on where to deliver the letters. In the movie, it completely skips over that part and goes directly to when Uncle Vernon goes mad and moves the whole family to a house in the middle of nowhere to get away from all the letters. Dudley Dursley bluntly said, “'Daddy’s gone mad, hasn’t he?'”(43). Also, Hermione, Ron, and Harry do not choose to go looking for the forbidden corridor, as it shows in the movie. Harry and Ron were challenged by Malfoy and his friends to a wizarding duel, oblivious to the fact that this was all a set up to get them in trouble by Filch. He accepted and they planned to meet in the trophy room after curfew. Hermione heard about this and went to stop them and Neville was also there with them because he was locked out of the Gryffindor common room. They all came to the realization that this was a trap and heard Filch come up to the trophy room. They all ran and that is when they stumbled upon the forbidden corridor. The movie even cut out Neville's part which made it very boring to watch, since he is such an eccentric character. Many characters were barely mentioned in the movie, like Nicholas Flammel. He was the actual maker of the stone and was barely brought up in the movie, he is the whole reason why the title is what it is so it made no sense why they hardly mentioned him. Also, the film did not mention the name of Harry's pet owl, Hedwig or Filchs pet cat Mrs.Norris. Also Peeves the poltergeist is not once mentioned in the movie at all, that was very bothersome as well. He saw Hermione, Ron, Harry, and Neville out after curfew and said nothing to Filch, who was chasing them. He was also a memorable wacky character who should have been in the movie. Peeves the Poltergeist said to Filch, "NOTHING! Ha haaa! Told you I wouldn't say nothing if you didn't say please! Ha ha! Haaaaaa!" (160). The reasons above explain very well that the book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by, J.K Rowling, was better than the movie. The book was more interesting and told the story in a broader and more detailed way where the movie failed to. In the book we get to see what the characters are thinking and feeling, especially Harry. There are many small and major details that got overlooked in the making of the movie. The only positive thing about the movies is the special effects and costumes. Overall the book was better than the movie will ever be.
