The plane crashes, leaving the boys deserted on an island. Ralph and Piggy are the two characters in the beginning of the book who come up with the idea to blow a conch shell to see if there were any other survivors. Boys came running at the sound most likely thinking it was a signal to meet. The boys in the beginning are smart and try to figure out what they must do; they put a leader into position (Ralph) and figure out who must keep a fire going and hunt for food. Jack (one of the main characters was put in charge of hunting for food with a group a people while they were also in charge of keeping the signal fire going so someone could hopefully see the smoke and rescue them. The later on the book gets the more Jack forgets to keep the signal fire going and they soon let it go out, this starts the drama of the story and this is what makes the boys start fighting. The boys look for shelter and decide to build shelter right on the shore in which they landed. Fighting about the shelter, the fire, and the conch (which allows someone to talk when they have meetings) occurs. “Piggy opened his mouth to speak, caught Jack’s eye, and shut it again. Jack held out his hands for the conch and stood up, holding the delicate thing carefully in his sooty hands” (Golding 42). After fighting occurs Jack decides he has had enough and he takes a group of boys with him to a shelter they found close the other side of the island. They steal fire from Ralph’s group of boys to have a feast. Ralphs group of boys (including Piggy Sam and Eric) go to the feast to see what is going on, during this Simon was sent into the woods to find a peaceful place, this is when he saw the lord of the flies. Simon was put into a trance type of mode and when he went down to the feast he was acting so crazy the boys thought he was the beast that they were hearing at night and they killed him.
