Before knowing about Mali, I figured it was just another place in Africa. After valuable research and an interview, I think Mali is an amazing place full of so many incredible things, especially food. I was really surprised when talking to Fatou about how much rice she eats. Since I love rice, I was able to relate to her with ease. I also loved knowing her favorite American song is “Lean and Dab” which is a lot of our favorite!
Both the countries of Mali and America have the similarities of making food. At least in my family, we buy a lot of our ingredients and then make our food. Fatou does the same thing. Another similarity between our countries are
our climates. We have hot areas and colder ones with rain, though Mali may have less. We are very different in the aspect of family. Here, I feel like we are more disrespectful and don’t spend as much time together. In Mali, family is always together and everyone is family. Communities in Mali are always calling each other by “aunt” and “uncle” which is interesting because they aren’t related. I’d like to start eating together as a family more often until it turns into and every-night routine; I want us to be more connected in each other’s life’s.
Talking to someone from Mali and doing research about it has allowed me to see that people are very similar no matter where they come from. This has also opened up doors for me because now I want to go travel and try these foods for myself, but not just in Mali. I also feel like communication is a barrier to the freedom of seeing the world and living life to it’s fullest. Since I’ve done this, I feel like only a part of that barrier is now broken and that it’s my duty to continue to break it down.
