We would like to point out that Panama has a very successful economy with a real GDP growth rate of more than 7.5 %. It was not always that way. About 7 years ago, Panama elected Ricardo Martinelli as their president. There is a marked similarity between Martinelli and Donald Trump. They both have a stout stature and a robust delivery. Like Trump, Martinelli is a very successful business man owning the largest grocery chain in Panama. They called him a “clown” as well. He was elected mainly because the PDR party, progressives, were so corrupt it was contemptible. The GDP growth was about 2.5%. Almost immediately his business friendly administration turned the economy around. Panama has since been polled by Gallop to be first in the country you would like to live. We have personally observed an enormous increase in the quality of life as well.
Martinelli did not have it easy, the Progressives and their union thugs tried every way possible to disrupt the economy by all kinds of methods, particularly in blocking the highways. In our area, the only highways to Costa Rico and central Panama were blocked several times isolating us - we were not happy. Panama followed the Chilean (also a Socialist country) model of economic freedom. Equity came from banks, family pools and tearing open the mattresses. Also, a lot of money came from China who recognized a good deal. Finally when the big banks decided to see what was happening, they reported that Panama really did have a robust economy, but was concentrating on building and would not be self sustaining. This stupid statement reflects the depth of Keynesian economic spending model stagnating the US
