Similarities Between Mary And Max
Our Imperfect World

“You are imperfect. And so am I. All humans are imperfect.”

Elliot’s animation style in the film Mary and Max reflects how imperfect life and people can be. All the objects and characters in the film are a bit off-center, squished and disfigured. I do not believe this film could be made as a ‘live action’ film as it would lose its quirkiness and uniqueness.

“Jurors are outstanding members of the community who haven’t murdered anyone.”

The ‘darkness’ highlighted in Elliot’s work is in the realistic events that happen in the film. Disney, Warner Bros and Pixar all add an impractical tone in their films whereas Elliot uses events that are possible and realistic, for example: someone could drown or have Asperger’s syndrome. They ‘soften the blow’ for kids and adults, make this a world where people live good lives, fall in love and try their best and succeed. A common ground between Elliot’s animation and these other companies mentioned is humour; they both include humour in their works to make life seem a bit better than it is, to get people to laugh and focus on the good in the world.

    Mary Macillop Beatitude

The first beatitude that Mary Mackillop lived out was “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. I chose this beatitude because Mary showed this as soon as she began the Saint Joseph’s school. This was the first Catholic school that Mary Mackillop setup and it was free for all boys and girls. By her beginning these schools and the children being able to go there for a free education, Mary was showing that she believes anyone has the right to and can have an education. The world is anyone's if you put in hard work and effort, which I strongly believe Mary thought. As she enabled children in rural town areas across all of Australia and parts of New Zealand to have an education, which if it wasn’t for her they may never have gotten that chance to. The kingdom of heaven is the poor’s as they are understanding and thoughtful.…

The film uses many shadows and dark and light contrasts. The low key soft lighting keeps the scenes dark and gloomy and projects the air of suspense. The viewer is told the story through the central character, Gittes, a hard-nosed detective in 1930’s LA, after he takes a case investigating adultery gets caught up in the middle of murder, lies and conspiracy- entangled into the dark side of humanity. When he meets the ‘real’ Evelyn, who comes across as mysterious, sensual and troubled, Gittes falls further into this web of corruption and complication as well as falling for Evelyn.…

The life of a Puritan was one filled with hard work and praising the lord God. We are able to learn more about their ideals through their works of art. The Portrait of Elizabeth Freake and her Baby Mary reflects the two main ideals in puritan philosophy which are so simply summarized in Ephesians 2: 8-9, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast". The two main ideals of puritan philosophy are humility and the grace of God.…

By comparing Mary’s reaction to Haskins’, it becomes clear that Haskins had careless reactions to receiving threatening letters. Mary is angry, whereas Haskins is calm. Evidence that demonstrates Haskins reaction is when he exclaims, “Nothing. I get those all the time.” This reveals Haskins is not concerned about the hate letters he is receiving.…

Joy influenced the author politically with the resources she had but Mary didn't have many resources so she couldn't influence him in many positive ways. Slavery in the 1840s

Slavery was always a controversial issue in America. Many people saw slavery as an essential part of life in every aspect, while others saw it as immoral and an injustice to humanity. In the 1840s when Manifest Destiny started to thrive, things began to heat up. New territories meant a possibility for a new slave or free state in America. Because the new territories were allowed the right of popular sovereignty to determine whether they would have slaves or not, abolitionists and non-abolitionists were at a constant battle to gain a new state.…

The pressures of today’s social issues have made us within society so insane that we are compelled to create monsters of ourselves and view our lives as God like and perfect in order for us to survive. Victor Frankenstein from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and The Narrator from David Fincher’s Fight Club thought so. They both were so desperate to extract a purpose of being from the shackles that society had placed upon them they tried to find a sense of being, love and purpose within themselves and were blind to the affections of others around them.…
