Similarities Between New Orleans And The World On The Turtle's Back

These questions come from themes explored in the texts “New Orleans” by Joy Harjo and “The World on the Turtle’s Back” a myth of the Iroquois people. These texts are stories which provide a background to the beliefs of the writer and people from the same place. In slight contrast to this, “The Gunslinger” by Stephen King, strays further from ancestral culture and has stronger uses of literary devices to portray the culture demonstrated in the text. The way these stories portray the characters highlights the cultural differences between each story’s characters. Although they each cover different ideas, “The World on the
This story demonstrates the duality of existence similar to “The Gunslinger”. Using this, I believe this encapsulates the idea that the culture in which opposing views allows for the justification of it. Again, like “The Gunslinger”. This said culture brings about growth and acceptance and using the story of the Iroquois people allows for their people to shape themselves from the stories which observe the culture of the past. In the story of “New Orleans” cultural impact is shown through cultural differences between different ethnic groups. The description of the vibrant town is highlighted by the fact that the groups are not completely dictated by the place in which they come from, but the culture of the city and what goes on. The author, Joy Harjo, shows that cultural context can make open-minded people, allowing for individuals to experience life and see the world with a unique perspective shaped by their experiences.
