“And God said, let there be light: and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3). Christian’s believe in one God as their only creator. This is known as monotheism. According to Genesis, the first chapter of the Bible, God had created light and separated it from darkness, thus creating day and night. “The Creation Story” from the Bible later reveals that the earth was created in six days and rested on the seventh (Genesis 1). Opposing the Bible, “The World on a Turtle’s Back” begins with a pregnant women infatuated with strange delicacies. The women had demanded that her husband gather bark from the roots of a sacred tree. The disobedient husband did not accept the mission so the pregnant wife had become very impatient and bent over to collect the bark from the roots herself. Meanwhile, the women fell. As the women fell downward, she frantically tried to grip anything she could find hanging on the edge of the Sky-World to catch her fall. The story continues by explaining how the birds of the sea gently caught the women and calmly placed her on the back of a turtle. The creatures of the sea tended to the women by getting all necessary materials she needed. The muskrat had gathered her soul from the bottom of the sea. While on the turtle’s back, the women planted the roots she had gathered on the descending trip. From there, the women began to walk in a circle the direction in which the sun goes and the earth began to grow (WOTB 36). Right from the beginning, these two stories are…

Genesis 2.4b-3.24 explains about the creation and describes the Garden of Eden along the events that occur inside such Garden. God plants a garden in Eden, briefly describing the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. However this part is focused on the creation of the persons. It explain the creation of Adam, meaning “humankind” in Hebrew. In Genesis 2.23, God puts the man in a deep sleep and from his rib bone make the woman. This may be understood as females come from the male and indicates the possibility of heterosexual attraction between them.…

    1. Why did you decide to read this book? At first, I was going to pick the book “The boy in the striped pyjamas” of John Boyne since I’ve read it in Vietnamese verse and so blown away by it as such a distinguished perspective into the Holocaust and the Auschwitz concentration camp. But because I’ve already read it, the book would just be a safe choice for me…

In “The World on the Turtle’s Back” I noticed that there are several positive traits in the Native American culture. One trait shown in the text was that the Iroquois people were very caring and wanted to help one another out as best as they could. In the story this was found when the pregnant woman was falling and the flock of birds teamed up to catch her and break her fall. The next trait shows how the Iroquois people are courageous and willing to risk everything to help someone out or help everyone. During the creation myth the muskrat built up enough courage to go to the bottom of the sea to get some dirt for the woman to grow her crops on.…

If Genesis 2-3 were written from Eve’s point of view it might tell a different story than what we are familiar with. The LORD God had created the earth in six days but even someone as great as he needed a day to rest. The seventh day was a day of rest and God made it a holy day. Upon beholding his creation the LORD God realized that “he had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground” (2:5). Finally he caused a mist to rise from the earth and water everything; I had no reason not to believe what I was told; that Adam, the first man came into existence because “the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Gen. 2:7). God created a garden in the eastern parts of Eden and Adam grew to know this as his home.…
