It represents the center of the world, connecting the heavens to the earth. The cottonwood tree was extraordinarily scared for two reasons: it was the tree that taught the Lakota how to make a tipi by using it's leaves, and when cut, the tree's upper limb crosswise, inside hold a perfect five-pointed star that represents the presence of the Great Spirit. Before the tree is cut down, an elder speaks a prayer over the tree for success. The eagle and buffalo are the Plains Indians’ most sacred animals; they have a place on the tree center. Being flies closest to the Sun, the eagle acts as a messenger that delivers prayers from man to the Wakan-Tanka (God).…

Spotted Woodpecker survived the flood by perching itself atop the tallest tree in the world, but as he saw the water rise all the way to his feet, he cried out for his uncle's help. "Save me, I'm drowning! - he cried. The Sun God's daughters heard him and told Kaqunupenawa that his nephew was dying of cold and hunger. The Sun God lowered his torch, the one he used to light the world and create the stars, and he warmed the Spotted Woodpecker with its heat. Constructing this story first with the campfire is the cliché atmosphere for the bonding of man and his offspring. Significantly, the selective detail of the pine falling from the tree foreshadows the similar genealogical-biological proverb, “the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree”. Building on this mutuality, the audience can infer the strain that will soon occur between the father and the son. Nature alludes to the genealogy between man and father. When the narrator expresses, “when you slept inside the tent it seemed always that it was raining outside because the needles from the pine kept falling…,” one can conclude the agony that will soon come from the one who inflicts this pain. Conclusively, the imagery reflects a correlation, but a sense of authority and…

    1. Why did you decide to read this book? At first, I was going to pick the book “The boy in the striped pyjamas” of John Boyne since I’ve read it in Vietnamese verse and so blown away by it as such a distinguished perspective into the Holocaust and the Auschwitz concentration camp. But because I’ve already read it, the book would just be a safe choice for me…

Both “The Earth on Turtle’s Back” and “When Grizzlies Walked Upright” take place during a time where earth was being created. The Grizzly bear myth states, “[b]efore there were people on earth” (“When Grizzlies” 1) and the turtle tale says, “[b]efore this Earth existed, there was only water” (“The Earth” 3). As seen, both stories take place before much of Earth existed because, likewise in both settings, nature and animals play a big part, with beavers, eagles, bears, fish and many others coming into play. Both stories take place during this time because they’re recounting how the earth and humanity came to be. Native American’s take nature as a sacred thing, so having their stories set in a time where humans are not the focus is a perfect way to shed light on the importance of nature, which is what both stories…
