At first, I was going to pick the book “The boy in the striped pyjamas” of John Boyne since I’ve read it in Vietnamese verse and so blown away by it as such a distinguished perspective into the Holocaust and the Auschwitz concentration camp. But because I’ve already read it, the book would just be a safe choice for me and I do want to read something new. Therefore, I decided to go for a book which I knew completely nothing about. As a result, “Turtles all the way down” became a part of my bookshelf as a recommendation from an article about new worth-reading books on Buzzfeed.com – an interesting but click-bait website to be honest.

And to be honest, I myself do have mixed feelings about it, too. As I had no ideas what the book is about at first, after reading few pages, I was somehow a bit disappointed because I thought it was about the old cliché teenage problems: love life, friendship and family stuff, like the book “To the moon and back”, which is an unrealistic cheesy love story in my opinion. Those things have never been my cup of tea as I much prefer thriller books. But then, the important thing that caused my attention was the moment I realized our main character – Aza Holmes, were struggling with OCD, which made her daily life so difficult and miserable, to the point that she constantly performed some kind of self-harm stuff to be able to feel normal, or being exist. I was very surprised at this feature as I’ve never seen, or at least read any books that mention mental illness as the main point I really like the way John Green build the whole story around Aza’s battle with OCD but in an indirect and gentle way that won’t make readers feel scared.
