Even though the people of Panem live in a stricter society, there are a lot of connections that can be made between the two civilizations. In “The Hunger Games” Panem’s government/society is quite different from ours, but there are similarities in regards of democratic foundations, the ideal citizen, media role, and government role.
First, our society is alike to Panem’s because of the way the government is set up and how we live in general. For example, both countries criticize whether you're wealthy or poor, upper or lower class, and whether you can live at ease or in poverty. One similarity, is how big of and influence celebrities are to the people who occupy the two different populations. For example, “selfies” did not get really popular until celebrities started posting more and more. In Panem, a trend is started in the games when Katniss wore her famous braid. Also, people’s music taste are swayed by these figures. Of course, most kids in our time are going to want to be listening to the “top hits”. During the games Katniss sings to Rue -while dying- affecting the audience's feelings.(pp.234-235) Finally, looks are a big thing that media can control in the U.S. and Panem. Everyone in the Capital is trying to look young and good. Yeah, everyone wants to do the same here but it usually goes as far as wanting the latest shoes or accessories. Both government systems set and enforce the laws, keep order over the nation, and assist the ones in need. To help assist citizens here the government does things like have food drives, open shelters, and have blood drives. In Panem, one of the big things they do to “help” is have tesserae, the catch is you have to put your name in more times at the reaping. Every year the Hunger Games are held to scare citizens into obeying the law and to prevent another uprising. In the U.S. you could get thrown in prison or fined for breaking the law, so that helps people here obey the laws. The government has a strong hold over the two countries.
“The Hunger Games” is a very interesting book that makes you think. Throughout the book you can see Panem’s government/society is very similar to ours in terms of democratic foundations, the ideal citizen, media role, and government role.
