In "Love in L.A.", Jake crashes into another car. This causes a huge conflict between him and a fine looking women named Mariana. Jake flirts with Mariana and lies to her to keep her mind off of the car damage. Mariana seems to be flattered but Jake is only interested in getting away clean. He hands all false information to her. Now I feel that Jake can be compared to Henry in "The Red Convertible". Henry is the older brother between him and Lyman. Henry is drafted in Vietnam and is shaken up badly. He is not himself anymore. He acts very strange until Lyman destroys the car that the two cherished. Henry fixes the car back up and seems to be almost normal again. Henry only lied to his family by acting normal. He goes insane and drowns himself in the lake. I compare Jake and Henry by the lies they both told. They contrast by the lies being told in two different forms. Jake lied through being sly and persuasive and Henry lied through acting normal.…

American founding father, James Madison, and twentieth century theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr, write about government from two very different perspectives. Madison, a rationalist from the age of enlightenment, had an optimistic view of the possibilities of a democratic government that was formulated during the early days of a young nation. On the other hand, Niebuhr, writing more than a century and a half later, critiques a democratic government that has been in place for generations. Both agree that controlling self-interest is necessary in order to have a functioning, well-organized government and society.…

They also pro-business and they felt no need to regulate businesses in American. They wanted to keep taxes down and business profits up. They helped the American manufactures by imposing a high tariff on imported goods. The economy was rolling strong during the twenties which made it easy for these presidents. They all rode the American boom into the ground. This is way the Great Depression follows the roaring twenties. Most of the historians claim that the presidents of the twenties were just mediocre. This would be a tough opinion to argue considering what is in store down the future…

In chapter 1, after they discuss all of Cohn’s boxing accomplishments, Jake states “I have never met any one of his class who remembered him” (Hemingway 11). This shows that even though Cohn was very good at something, no one had the interest of forming any type of relationship with Cohn. As chapter 1 goes on, Jake begins to discuss the very few relationships that Cohn does have. H begins by explaining that Cohn “was married to the first girl who was nice to him” (Hemingway 12). Unfortunately, Cohn was only able to hang on to his marriage for 5 years. Besides the wife that Cohn pursued, he only had two other friends. Jake mentions that “Robert Cohn had two friends, Braddocks and myself. Baraddocks was his literary friend. I was his tennis friend.” (Hemingway 13). It is evident that Cohn did not have the skills to maintain a variety of friends. He is not even able to keep more than one friend inside either of his favorite…

Ben and Anna, who had a share of intimacy with each other although Ben was married to Janine. Beth and Neil, they were together for 7 years but have yet to get married due to Neil’s “beliefs”. A few examples of weak relationships are: Montag and Mildred, and Montag and Beatty's relationships. Montag and Mildred don't have much of a relationship or connection. In turn from this Mildred turned on Montag and called the firefighters. Beatty and Montag seem to have an okay connection in the beginning but in the middle to end when Beatty talks to Montag about the history of firefighters it seems to go down the drain and near the end Montag ends up torching Beatty so that shows a really great relationship. "The important thing for you to remember, Montag, is we're the Happiness Boys... you and I and the others. We stand against the small tide of those who want to make everyone unhappy with conflicting theory and thought. We have our fingers in the dike. Hold steady. Don't let the torrent of melancholy and drear philosophy drown our world." (Bradbury). One can tell that this is when Montag and Beatty still sort of have that connection of being firefighters, even if Montag is a little iffy at this point in time. This is where I believe that their relationship turned for good: "We must all be alike. Not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal. Each man the image of every other; then all are happy, for there are no mountains to make them cower, to judge themselves against. So! A book is a loaded gun in the house next door. Burn it. Take the shot from the weapon." (Bradbury).…

Romantic relationships are great, you are with the one person who truly understands you and there is no greater feeling. Lucy and Ed are trying to make a romantic relationship work but they didn’t start it with honesty. “Lying isn’t my idea of romance”. Lucy and Ed began their relationship based on lies. Ed “thinks about her finding out” he is “Shadow”. Ed “thinks about her being disappointed because” he is “guy going nowhere, not a guy who is sensitive and smart and funny” like Lucy has created Shadow to be in her mind. Ed is afraid that he will not meet Lucy’s expectations therefore he did not reveal his true identity to her from the beginning. “Truth is better, painful, but better”. Ed should have told Lucy the truth from the beginning and Lucy shouldn’t have been so blinded by the fantasy she has created in her mind. By Ed not telling anyone he is Shadow, when Lucy finds out, her and Jazz “feel like the stupidest girls in the world” because they have been played from the start. Leo and Jazz also started their relationship based on lies. Leo is “Poet” and he “owes money to Malcolm Dove”. Leo doesn’t tell Jazz that he is “Poet “because he “likes to live for the adrenalin” and he thought it would be fun. By lying about his identity and his debt to Malcolm, he endangers the girls when Malcolm comes to collect and Leo doesn’t have the money. Truthfulness is optimal to maintain a romantic relationship and friendship, lying just ruins everything.…
