In the black cat, the man ends up feeling guilty of murdering the black cat, and in revenge he ends up killing his wife. This revenge also is what leads to him being sentenced to death by hanging. In his other story, Madeline is buried alive, and in revenge, she comes back to life and kills her sister and the house is made to crack. This paper will exploit how the theme of fear, guilt and revenge is particularly evident in both stories by Edgar Poe. The black cat was composed by Edgar Allan Poe who is a horror master. This story is really a downer. It is s story on brutal murder and domestic violence which is stripped until bare bones are left. The story is a confession of death-row of anonymous person who ends up destroying himself, his pets and his wife. Roderick Usher suffers “much from a morbid acuteness of the senses; the most insipid food was alone endurable; he could wear only garments of certain texture...” (Poe). Poe clearly depicts Roderick Usher with vampire qualities, and the use of an asyndeton stresses the many health issues that evince his vampirism. Throughout the story there are many other accounts that expresses Roderick’s vampire qualities and how they are affected by his mental state. Because of this situation Roderick remains vulnerable to Madeline’s supernatural influence and the Usher family curse. His inability to handle certain fabrics and his sensibility to light relate to traditional vampire characters. Another characteristic of Usher is “...his unceasingly agitated mind was laboring with some oppressive secret, to divulge which he struggled for the necessary courage” (Poe). This epithet demonstrates how his secret controls his mind, which amplifies the sensitivity of his health and easy deluded manner. There a specific secret that Usher hides from the narrator provides explanation to his odd character and unstable mind. His secret takes control of his character almost driving him to insanity allowing supernatural forces to take over his mind and transform him…

In my essay, I will discuss mental disorder as a significant theme in the prose of Edgar Allan Poe. For these purposes, I have chosen three of his short stories: “The Fall of the House of Usher” (published in 1839), “The Black Cat” and “The Tell-Tale Heart” (both published in 1843) with the chief focus on the first one. I have chosen them for they all handle the theme in question, yet each one of them in a different manner. The main body of the essay is divided into three parts, in which I will compare and contrast these three short stories discussing: first the characters of the stories affected by the mental disorder and its nature; then the pattern of the plot; and last the role of the narrator.…

Similarly, Irene and the unnamed narrator of “House Taken Over” are the last in their family, and they know that once they die, their home will be sold and nothing will be left. The siblings have everything to lose at any given moment, and by the end of the story, both do lose everything. These families meet a similar fate at the end of the story. In the Usher siblings’ case, the cause is more supernatural, while a series of unfortunate events caused the Irene and her brother to be all alone. Usher knew very well that, once his sick sister passed away, she “would leave him (him, the hopeless and the frail) the last of the ancient race of the Ushers” (Poe). This is a huge burden for Usher to bear, which has certainly contributed to his transformation into the madman he is at the end of the story. On the other hand, the siblings in “House Taken Over” shared this burden together. They knew “the unvoiced concept that the quiet, simple marriage of sister and brother was the indispensable end to a line established in this house by [their] grandparents. [They] would die here someday” (Cortázar), leaving the house to be inherited by distant relatives who don’t care about the home’s history. These character traits help to shape how readers view Usher, Madeline, Irene, and the unnamed narrator of Cortázar’s…

“The Raven” and “The Fall of The House of Usher” by Edgar Allen Poe both share a common plot but have different thematic meanings and insights. Both short stories reveal how each character handles their problems coping with death. Both short stories have a similar insight to personal problems. In my opinion, Roderick is also like his mansion. Only outside he doesn’t seem too healthy.…

In “The Fall of the House of Usher”, Edgar Allen Poe uses foreshadowing to entice the readers and to hint at future events that may occur later on in the story. An example in the story in which Poe uses the setting, particularly the “melancholy House of Usher”, to foreshadow the story’s outcome can be found in the final paragraph on page 63. In this paragraph, the narrator expresses his anxiety as he approaches the eerie, crumbling, and unsettling mansion. His description of “the crumbling condition of the individual stones” foreshadows the eventual downfall of the Usher family. The fact that the house is decaying also foreshadows the deterioration of Roderick Usher’s mind as he battles his…

The cause of the conflict in the story “The Black Cat” is lack of respect of morals. The narrator’s behavior was affected by his weakness, which is alcohol.
