This is called “Holy Matrimony”. The relationship is a lifelong bond between one man and one woman being one of the holiest gifts given by God. Like most religions, Christians cannot have children without first being married. If they do have a child that means that they broke the one of the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are the rules given by God to the people to follow, “Thy shall not commit adultery.” If this was broken, many things could happen to the offenders. It could range to shaming or excommunication from the community and church to death depending on what they church decided what to do. Western marriage is very similar to what Chinese marriage is like. Some people married for love, however, it marriage was used as a political positioning. For example, princes in Europe would marry other princesses from other kingdoms and countries to build peace bonds. However, this also caused trouble if the King divorces the Queen, which then would lead the two countries going to war. Marriage was also used as with social status. Families would not allow others to marry someone from a social class that is below them.
