Sister Cora's Jealousy In Sister Baker
“ Giving them the bread and butter of our labors is enough. Your mother is too free with everything it seems.” (page 41)

My interpretation of this quote is that the author is showing the readers that sister Cora does not particularly like Avla Jane’s mother. In my book the husbands of the community are supposed to take on multiple wives to have many children. Sister Cora is the first wife and Alva Jane’s mother is the fourth wife. MAny times throughout the story the author has shown the jealousy that takes place in the house between sister Cora and sister Sherrie. I also believe the author has used that quote to show that sister Cora doesn't like Alva Jane either. She views Alva to be better than her own daughter Leigh Anne and she does not

In line three, she uses a metonymy. She substitutes the word “bread” for “money”. The use of the phrase “earning their bread” (ln 2-3) suggests that children are working to be able to afford their necessities, which shouldn’t be the case if they are so young. This dramatizes the work that children do. Kelley goes on to use two oxymorons. She said, “Boys and girls … enjoy the pitiful privilege of working all night long” (ln 43-45). Privileges shouldn’t be pitiful. This provides a sarcasm that shows just how bad working conditions are. Her second oxymoron lies in lines 64-65, “free our consciences from participation in this great evil”. Evil shouldn’t be great. By using these contradictions, Kelley conveys her message with irony of the way that child labor is being handled.…
