Sitcom Big Bang Theory
For this assignment I watched an old episode of the sitcom Big Bang Theory in syndication on the TBS cable network; however, the show is still being produced and new episodes air weekly on CBS. The show was created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, and the target audience is ages 14-49 (Fandom TV, 2016). The episode I watched originally aired on February 24, 2011 and was from season 4, episode 17, “The Toast Derivation.” The main plot of this episode was that one of the main characters, Sheldon, came to the realization that he was not the center of their friend group dynamic, which consisted of Leonard (Sheldon’s roommate), Howard, and Rajesh (“Raj”). Leonard had recently started a new relationship with Raj’s sister, Priya, and Leonard decided
to shift the friends’ hangout location to Raj’s apartment, primarily because his (and Sheldon’s) apartment was across the hall from Penny, Leonard’s ex-girlfriend. This particular episode had many cultural and diversity issues, each of which are present throughout the series ten seasons. As the basic premise of the show follows the life events of this group of four friends, all intellectuals, humor is typically derived from their awkward social interactions and the issues often relate to sexism and classism (including elitism and intellectualism). There are also issues with racism as well.
