Having a child with Down syndrome seems to be challenging and frustrating. It is difficult to have a child with this kind of disability; it requires adjustments and understanding of the family members. Even the child has a disability, the child should also send to school in order for the child to learn. In school, the teacher should be knowledgeable about the cases to know the proper intervention to be given for the child. If the child has difficulty in some of his/her learning areas, the teacher should know what to do and what to employ strategies and techniques for the child with the disability to easily cope up to the lessons. In recent years, children with Down syndrome decreases death rate and increases birth rate, about 6,000 babies with Down syndrome is born each year. The life expectancy of children with Down syndrome increases between the year 1960 and 2007. In the year 1960, persons with Down syndrome lived to be about 10 years old, and in the year 2007, on average, persons with Down syndrome live to be about 47 years old. Research said that older mothers are likely to have a baby with Down syndrome than those younger mothers. Unfortunately, children who are born with Down syndrome are at higher risk for: (1) hearing loss (up to 75% may be affected); (2) obstructive sleep apnea, a condition where a person’s breathing temporarily stops while asleep; (3) ear infections (between 50-70% may be affected); eye diseases, like cataracts (up to 60 %); (4) heart defects which is already present at birth (50%); (5) thyroid disease a problem with metabolism; (6) iron deficiency anemia, a condition where the red blood cells don’t have enough iron to carry oxygen to the body (10%); (7) leukemia (1%); and (8) hirschsprung disease, it is an illness of the gut that can cause …show more content…
Adjustment mechanisms are one of the strategies of a teacher, the ability to adjust the learning environment to match the standard. Adjustment is making something different to adjust the child with the disability. Adjustment mechanism is used to teach the child without barriers. Adjustment mechanisms is essential especially for the child, teachers employ the different adjustment for children with Down syndrome. The child’s case depends upon the severity of the disability; the disability hinders the child to perform tasks which she/he wanted to. For the child to perform tasks without doubt and with a higher self-confidence the teacher must employ the different adjustment mechanisms which are appropriate to the characteristic that hinders the child to perform well. In an instance, when a child has slower learning, you should know what to do, after class you could approach the child and have some tutorial activity or in a classroom setting which has fast and slow learners, put him/her in which she categorized
