It is not a gentle sport. “You can’t go in this sport with a ballerina attitude. Hockey is a sport that requires toughness and focus. If you go in a hockey game with no focus, you are going to get thrown around the rink like a bouncy ball riding in a car. Hockey needs lots of focus, strength, and power.”
It’s not as easy as it looks. “Watching a hockey game, you see people gliding around on ice skates with sticks trying to make a goal. Though in reality skating with all your hockey gear on, it’s really tough. You don’t feel like you’re gliding at all at first. Hockey takes a lot of practice to have that control, first with your body, then with your hockey stick, lastly controlling the puck.”
Be prepared. “For hockey
you have to be prepared mentally and physically. You have to have all your equipment and most importantly water. During one hockey game a player can lose almost two liters of water weight, that’s why hydration is one of the most important things. Sure, you have to have all your equipment but you also need a positive attitude and good sportsmanship. Lots of games are lost due to losing good players in acts of bad sportsmanship. So in hockey it is clear to see being prepared can be the determination of a win or loss.”
Be ready for anything. “Hockey is very unpredictable. This is because people can also be unpredictable. You might have the best sportsmanship during a game but that doesn’t mean others do. Some players could drag you into an argument or a physical fight. That’s why in hockey it’s good to have a clear open mind and be ready for anything.”
It is always going to be fun. “Whether you win or lose, hockey is going to be fun. It has the whole package; adrenaline, competition, and fun physical activity. Hockey is just a great sport to be involved in. There are also great people to come along with it.”
