LA Final Draft:Skateboarding Skateboarding is a great sport to do in your spare time as well as professionally. Skateboarding is becoming a bigger and bigger sport every day. Skateboarding is evolving more each day and not just the skateboards are evolving, but the tricks and the parks are also.
Skateboarding has been going on for a while, but just like everything else it had to start somehow. In the late 1950’s a group of bored Californian surfers put a pair of roller skate wheels on a surfboard and created what we consider the first skateboard. The skateboard became a pretty cool thing for …show more content…
a lot of people becauses there are so many uses for it like going to work/school, cruising, and just the fact that it seems like you're surfing on land. As more and more people started using this skateboard people started to realize that this skateboard could use some upgrades. One of the first things they realized was the wheels were pretty loud and it wasn’t a very smooth ride which is when they switched to urethane wheels which we still use today. Then they realized that this skateboard they could use to do tricks also which is when they added a kicktail. The kicktail is on the back of the board which gives the board pop for tricks. After skateboarding around the streets they decided they needed a spot to where just skateboarders could hang out and skate. That was when the first skatepark was invented in California on March 3, 1976. After that they realized it was pretty cool to have their own skateboard park, but they still thought something was missing so on April 10, 1977 at the first skatepark they had the first skateboard competition.
Now that we know the history of skateboarding, let's find out about the parts that make up the skateboard. Let’s start with the board, the board is the wooden part of the skateboard that you stand on. On top of the the board is the griptape. The griptape gives you grip so you don’t slide off the board. The next part of the skateboard is the trucks. The trucks are the metal part of the skateboard that the wheels are on. After that are the wheels. The wheels are the part that help the skateboard role. There are also bearings, which are a very important part of the skateboard. The bearings are the things that go inside of the wheels to make them role. Without the bearings the skateboard wouldn’t be able to go anywhere. And last but certainly not least is the hardware. The hardware is all of the screws, nuts, and bolts that help hold everything together.
Now that we know the parts of the board why don’t we figure out the brands of the parts. The brands that that I will be listing are not all of the brands but just some of the most popular brands. Why don’t we start with Diamond. Diamond is a skateboard brand that mainly just makes the boards and hardware. The next brand is Independent. Independent specializes in trucks. This brand has been rated one of the best truck brands for skateboards. After that is Spitfire. This is personally one of my favorite brands. Spitfire makes mainly skateboard wheels. And finally is Reds. Reds is a bearing brand for skateboards. Reds is also raided the second best skateboard bearing.
Now that we have got all of that out of the way, let’s talk about the people that do the tricks and ride the skateboards.
The first person is Tony Hawk. Whether you are a skateboard fan or not, you should at least know who Tony Hawk is. Tony Hawk is also one of the most popular athletes in the world. For example Tony Hawk invented the 900. Tony Hawk landed this trick in 1999 at the X-Games. After ten failed attempts he finally landed it on the eleventh try. This trick included a ollie 540, kickflip 540, and varil 720. One of the next great skateboarders is Nyjah Huston. Nyjah Huston is considered the overall champion in street league. He has won street league in the following years: 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016. He is the highest paid skateboarder in the world, making 6 million dollars a year. A hint to his success is he started skateboarding at age 9 then he became a professional skateboarder at age 15. The last thing I will say about Nyjah Huston is that he interacts with his community. I think this is a great thing to do because he dose things from donating money to skating with the locals. And the final skateboarder we will be hearing about today will be the Cody McEntire. Cody McEntire has only entered one SLS competition and although he did not win it his first year in SLS he still came very close. Another cool thing about Cody McEntire is that he actually came from Belton, Texas. He is the first skateboarder I know that has came anywhere near Belton, Texas. Also cody McEntire is 29 years old which is pretty old to be a Street League Skater. Cody McEntire is also sponsored by Blind, RDS, Silver, FKD, Filmbot, OC Ramps, Was Watchers, and Wreck
Wheels.
As skateboarding progresses daily and becomes bigger, more people are becoming part of the skateboard community.
