Charma Informative Speech
I’d like to introduce you to Charmayne James. She is quite possibly the greatest barrel racer on earth. Of course, every champion starts out small. It all started in Clayton, New Mexico with a dream and three barrels. When Charmayne was only 12, she bought Scamper from a feedlot for around $1,500. A feedlot is a place horses are usually taken to be fattened up before they are sent to slaughter. In the beginning Gilly’s Bay Boy, also known as Scamper, was known to buck when he was asked to canter. However, Charmayne never let his obstinance get in the way of her goals. She didn’t just qualify for it, in fact she went on to win her first World Champion as well as the Rookie of the Year award. To this day, she is one of the youngest NFR Qualifiers.

One of the most memorable runs Charmayne and Scamper ever made was in the seventh round of the 1985 NFR. It was December 13th, and as Scamper and Charmayne ran into the arena, something went wrong. Somehow her bridle broke, giving her no control over the powerhouse known as Scamper. He held onto the bit, despite the bridle being broken, until he turned the third barrel. Then he spit it out and finished his run. Despite the broken equipment, Charmaine and Scamper had the fastest time of the night, winning that go round. Over the course of her career, Charmayne qualified for the NFR 19 times from 1984-2002. In fact she holds the record not only for the most qualifications, but also the most NFR wins. She has won the NFR 11 times, 10 in a row from 1984-1993, and she won it again in 2002. She has also been one of the top career money earners in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association. In fact she was the first million dollar earner. She has made $1,842,506 barrel racing. She is also one of only a handful of women who have won all 10 consecutive nights at the NFR. Charmaine achieved that amazing feat in
